<p>I find Austin SO overrated. It’s only “liberal” because it’s plopped in the middle of red-state Texas. Otherwise, the social norms of Austin don’t at all seem liberal to me - they seem like any major northern city.</p>
<p>Regarding Pitt since the OP requested it, I think Pitt is pretty gay friendly. There is a very active Rainbow Alliance chapter here.</p>
