to give people some confidence or hope for their reaches, what was the most surprising admissions decision that you've ever heard of?

I'm talking people with subpar stats getting into awesome colleges.
Know a guy with a 2.7 that got into UMD, who says their average is a 3.9 :P That's the most major thing so far. Anyone else?

I know an amazing girl from Jamaica who got accepted to Amherst last year pretty much soley based on her personal essay from the supplement. I read over it after because I was so shocked. It was pretty great. She graduated with around a 3.8 and maybe 5 AP classes, a track runner (no awards), but veeery average SAT’s (nationally, not Amherst average) and is having a fantastic time on a full ride.

Still, she happened to be incredibly lucky. :)

I have a friend who accepted by UMD and Penn State as an out of state student with a 1520 on the SAT, a 70 on her transcript, and took one AP class. She was a URM and a great writer though.

@Meanderer Oh, I probably don’t know her if she’s at boarding school.

I know this guy who went to Brown this year, and apparently he’s some form of tennis jock but he performed poorly in school and now has to have tutors to help him understand the classes. I thought Ivy Leagues didn’t really buy into that but I guess not…

^ lol, he does NOT sound very amazing at all!

I’m guessing he got in on his tennis merits? I hate to think of it, but colleges are also businesses and their first priorities do seem to reflect their desire to safisfy their own needs.

That’s one of the reasons I started this thread. One of my friends is incredibly concerned about getting into USC, and she has some better stats than that and some nice ECs… Hopefully I can tell her this and it will cheer her up :)
