Most to least prestigious olympiad?

International Science Olympiad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So that's a link of all possible olympiads. I don't know anything about the other olympiads except USAPhO, USABO, USAMO, and USNCO. Still, I would rank them in order from most prestigious to least with:

USAMO
USAPhO=USABO
USNCO

can anyone give me any feedbacks about the other olympiads and a list of the most prestigious to the least?

There’s also NACLO- North American Computaional Linguistics Olympiad
USACO- USA Computing Olympiad.

I’d say the list is:
USAMO
USAPhO = USABO = USACO
USNCO
NACLO

Why is Chem Olympiad so low?

they’re all pretty prestigious to colleges. doing well in any is a very helpful boost to your app.
in my eyes, though, usamo and usaco top the list. usapho comes a close second, followed by naclo, and then the rest.

[ul][] The Ancient Olympics
[] The Modern Olympics
[] The Special Olympics
[] The Paralympics
[li] The academic subjects that don’t resemble the athletics of the Olympic games in any concrete way and need a new name (The Math World Series? The Chemistry World Cup? The Biology Superbowl?)[/ul]
[/li]

[Why call them olympiads?](Olympiad - Wikipedia)

@Urc: Rly? Where I live, almost nobody even knows what NACLO is. The people that do write it just take it for fun without the intention of making it to finals or whatnot

Agreed with LaCielle. Except more like

USAMO

(giant gap)

USAPhO = USABO = USACO
USNCO
NACLO

i just based it on how i think of them, which is why i ranked naclo higher. :stuck_out_tongue: yeah naclo is prestigious, but has a smaller population than the others.

My list:
USAMO
USNCO(dont actually know about this one, Im just going off of what I’ve read)
USABO/USAPHO
USACO(chem, not cs)
NACLO(not really prestigious)

I loved the games of the 17th Olympiad. Best Olympiad ever.

and IMO > all

Someone should make a Geology Olympiad…
Mining companies have loads of money, which translates to more sponsorships. The prizes would be huge :D

They have one in Russia: [OLYMPIAD ON GEOLOGY](http://sscadm.nsu.ru/ssc/eng/OLI_GEOE.HTM)

The closest international olympiad would be [International Earth Science Olympiad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](International Earth Science Olympiad - Wikipedia)

There seems to be 12 in total: ([International Science Olympiad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](International Science Olympiad - Wikipedia))

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO, since 1959; not held in 1980)
The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO, since 1967; not held in 1973, 1978, 1980)
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO, since 1968; not held in 1971)
The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI, since 1989)
The International Biology Olympiad (IBO, since 1990)
The International Philosophy Olympiad (IPO, since 1993)
The International Environmental Project Olympiad (INEPO, since 1993)
The International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO, since 1996)
The International Geography Olympiad (IGeO, since 1996) [1]
The International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL, since 2003)
The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO, since 2004) [2]
The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA, since 2007) [3]
The International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO, since 2007) [4]

Too bad my country(Canada) only participates in the first 5. USA doesn’t participate in many of them either :(

^ Apparently in the International Philosophy Olympiad you have four hours to write a philosophical essay in a language other than your own. Doesn’t that sound like the competition would favor people from countries that have a language they usually speak but speak english well too?

The US doesn’t participate in olympiads like Astronomy, and I don’t think we do earth science, environmental, geography, junior science

Is there really a big gap between USAMO and USAPhO? And why’
s USNCO lower than USABO and USAPhO? I only heard it was less prestigious but how?

I’ve gone for one of the astronomy olympiads that the US could have participated in and they weren’t there. I was actually quite surprised.

@082349: Wanna share with us how it went?
@kwkingdom123: I think its cuz in USAPhO, USABO and USANCO all you really need to do is study the content well, wheras USAMO needs problem solving which is harder to achieve since it’s not plain memorizing. In otherwords, anyone who studys hard enough can do well in the first 3, but not necessarily in USAMO

@LaCielle But what about physics? I’m pretty sure that requires some problem solving skills too which you can’t just memorize.
