I found myself noticing that schools I thought of as very selective back when I was applying thirty years ago are practically begging for applicants now. I’m assuming it’s because tuitions are stratospheric and the schools are now unaffordable for practically everyone who would be full pay. I was stunned to find that Skidmore, for example, has an accept rate of around sixty percent.

USC went on to Common App last year so not surprisingly there was an increase in applications…same number of spots to fill (though at USC counselor day they did say they accepted more kids for F-2012, deferred many to S-2013 and said they are not planning on having that large of a frosh class again as it is draining resources) so now more apps in equals higher selectivity according to US News, it’s a numbers game. USC is still selective it hasn’t gotten more so just more apps makes it appear so.

There’s a great thread with a little something about many non-selective schools (defined for that purpose as “accept rate over 50%”)

And this has colleges that accept more than 49% of students and graduate more than 49% in 4/5 years: [50-50 College Listing - Do It Yourself College Rankings](50-50 College List)

And don’t forget that CSUs are using geographic region as an admissions point. http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf

It will even apply to transfer students to CSU Long Beach!

Pecking order of CSU admits: CC transfers, HS grad/first time frosh, out of region applicants (not sure if this applies to CC transfers too)

Another sad commentary on CSU is impaction information…it’s not just programs (nursing, architecture, engineering, etc.) it’s ENTIRE universities!

These reasons are driving our normal, B average kids out of California system and into neighboring or sometimes cross country colleges who promise 4 year grad rates and merit aid that can help make it within a 5-6K financial difference when calculating in ALL college related costs (not just tuition/fees @ CSUs).

UCs are so difficult to get into that kids are now considering in state private schools, hoping for merit aid or are also looking outside our state. Talk about BRAIN DRAIN.
