Most useful AP Tests

I plan to major in engineering. Which AP tests would be most useful for skipping out requirements, etc.? I went onto the AP credit website under coe but didn't really know what some of the things there meant. Could someone provide give me some insight into this situation?

You can compare the listings at http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/requirements/hum-ss-requirement/EXAM%20SCORES.pdf with the degree requirements for your intended major listed at http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/majors-minors/single-majors.html/ or http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/pagewithsidebar.2009-03-24.9443551818 . For humanities and social studies, see http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/requirements/hum-ss-requirement/HSS%20NEW_10-24-13.pdf .

But note that the CoE recommends trying the old Math 1A and 1B final exams to check your knowledge before skipping those courses using AP calculus credit:

http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/new-students/choosing-an-appropriate-first-math-course.html

You probably want to do something similar if you want to skip Physics 7A with a 5 on AP physics C mechanics. The same applies if you have AP chemistry credit for Chemistry 1A/1AL but need to take Chemistry 1B or 3A for your major (not all CoE majors require Chemistry 1B or 3A).

Some of the ‘must-take’ are:

AP Calculus BC - get a 5 and you’re out of Math 1A and 1B
AP Chemistry - get a 5 and you’re out of Chem 1A (yuck!)

The following are beneficial:
AP Physics C - get a 5 and you’re out Physics 7A, but that class is worth re-taking
AP English Lang/Lit - get above 4 and you’re out of the first half of the R&C requirement
AP History/Gov/Econ/Foreign language, etc. - exempt from one of the 6 humanities courses you have to take as an engineering student

Bottom line: take BC calc and AP Chem for sure.
