Mount Holyoke Class of 2022 RD

@philatelic Thank you!!

I will say that the reaction to using the word “ladies” is something that those considering MHC (perhaps all womens colleges?) need to consider. I have hard that despite their claims of “tolerance,” such environments are hostile to people who don’t ascribe to a narrow use of words and thoughts.

That does not encourage open discussion (especially when you consider that a large group of students come from other cultures and speak english as a second language).

can you explain what you mean a little more?

I have heard and read that students who are political moderates (vs extremely progressive or rightwing conservatives) are almost afraid to open their mouths because the “thought police” jump down their throat if they “slip up” and use a word life “freshman” (for example) or try to openly explore the validity of views that differ from super liberal.

It was Mount Holyoke, for example, that cancelled a performance of the much celebrated play “Vagina Monologues” because it was "offensive to women without vaginas.”

I am all for using language that is inclusive and respectful, but intolerance can operate in both directions (i.e,. left as well as right).

i have to say i have experienced nothing of the sort nor has my daughter. In fact when i went to parent’s weekend at MHC which also my alma mater, the MHC republicans were very well represented. I think you need to be careful when considering an all womens college. There are many generalizations made about those of us who went to one or are at one that are offensive. Like many schools there are extremes, but those extremes are not the norms, however much like the current climate, those voices can be loud. If you are looking for a college that does not encourage you or challenge you to consider views outside your own, MHC or most of the 7 Sisters are not the place. That being said, i will repeat that my daughter, as a middle of the road liberal with a boyfriend, has not felt pressured, insulted or unable to state her opinions. In fact while bringing her back from break, i completely missed that her friend was refering to her older sister as “they” and the oversight was handled graciously and kindly. I am curious what has attracted you to MHC?

I DO want an environment where differing views can be voiced and respectfully debated. That was the point of the OP.
It is encouraging to read that your experience, and that of your child, has been positive at MHC. I am sure that we want many of the same things that draws all applicants to MHC (excellent teaching, small classes, sense of community, location, access to five college consortium, etc)

I think you will find that at MHC or any of the other 7 sisters.

Agreed, but applicants should not be blindsided by this.

To me, the person who questioned whether the poster who raised this question belongs at Holyoke sort of reinforced her/his point.

and what i learned at MHC is that its ok to disagree.
