<p>Hi guys,</p>

<p>I haven't seen a thread for any MHC Early Decision II '18 applicants, so I thought I'd create one for us!</p>

<p>I studied at the Berklee College of Music for a semester in Spring '13, but my sponsor had to pull out; which meant I was on the first plane back to London after finals in May. All was not lost, as one of my favourite teachers at Berklee forwarded me some information about some fantastic liberal arts colleges that offer FinAid to international students. Although music is my ultimate passion, I've always been a person interested in many things. I think an LAC would be perfect for someone like me.</p>

<p>I'd like to concentrate in Music and Africana Studies, as well as English and perhaps Political Science. Who knows, I may even take a dance class or two (I danced up until the age of 15, why not take a nostalgic trip down memory lane). </p>

<p>The only thing that worries me is I need pretty much FULL FinAid, and I've heard that could potentially be a detriment. However, (I like to think) I wrote stellar essays for my Common App/Writing Supplement, I submitted an Art Supplement, as well as some dance certificates and creative writing. I had straight A<em>/B's throughout high school, and received straight A</em>s in GCSE, bar a B in Math. -_- I was leader of my school choir. I went to a bit of a rough/poor inner city public school, so extracurricular activities weren't really much of a thing, as well as AP. I don't think any UK schools actually participate in AP, although I could be mistaken. I did take a lot of extra classes, though.</p>

<p>I also got two arts (guitar/bass, voice) and two academic (English, Afro-American Culture, History & Music) teachers to each write me a letter of recommendation. Let's hope they wrote great ones! I did a lot of voluntary work for my local youth center and homeless shelter, but didn't mention it in my Common App (oops, doofus). I have a phone interview with a local alum tomorrow, so I will try and squeeze it in. I hope that's enough for them to overlook this aid thing. Come on, help a sister out.</p>

<p>I'd love to hear about any other fellow ED II applicants, whether you're US or international. What's your story? You never know, we could be classmates in the near future.</p>

<p>You sound like a suitable MHC applicant. Good grades and a ECs in a focused area. I’d contact the admissions officer for your region (international) and possibly arrange a an official interview. Another common factor among MHC women is holding a general idea of where they want their education to lead. In other words, they are already thinking about life and careers after college. MHC is generous with the aid for applicants with need. best of luck.</p>

<p>hey you sound great! ive heard of a lot people with similar grades get in, and yes they give out a lot of aid. im thinking of mt holyoke too, but my grades are pretty low :frowning: soo confused.</p>

<p>Hey momneeds2no, I had an official interview last night with an alumni which was arranged via the admissions office. The alum I spoke to was also a former music major, so the conversation flowed very naturally and seemed to go really well. She actually did ask what I wanted to do after college, and I let her know my plans. I want to hopefully go onto graduate school and get a masters in Ethnomusicology. I also want to set up a scholarship fund for intelligent underprivileged kids. Appy12, have faith! Apply, work on your essays and get some good letters of recommendation. You never know. :)</p>

<p>I wish all of you the best! Reading your messages reminds me of my journey as a CC transfer student to MHC. I had every grade from A+ to an F (Intro to Macroeconomics) on my CC transcript, one horrible quarter, and one gap where I subsequently withdrew from my classes. I didn’t hold any leadership roles on campus, but was absolutely passionate about Art History, foreign languages, worked while going to school, and spent my summers interning in museums. LrockinLDN, I had a wonderful interview with an alumna. I still have her card wishing me the best and her predictions of a self-designed minor in my MHC future. </p>

<p>I was admitted into MHC in 2010 and am a proud MHC alumna.</p>

<p>My own MHC path was rocky. I suffered from a great deal of depression and took a semester off. At the same time, MHC offered me so many resources to be the best me. I was awarded a university grant for research in Syria before the civil war and another for independent travel. I had the first real intensive, inclusive therapy for my childhood sexual assault which led to me confronting my attacker for the first time in 7 years. I designed that special minor. I made the best friends I’ve ever had and now speak another language. I went from never visiting outside the U.S. except for my mom’s family trips to Mexico to have traveled alone to 20 countries. I didn’t graduate at the top of the MHC class, in fact, my GPA was a 2.9 but still managed to be awarded a prestigious fellowship and work for an NGO I admired based in the Middle East right out of MHC. I’m applying for another fellowship right now due in 3 weeks.</p>

<p>In short, don’t ever give up and feel that one, two, or even three setbacks- whether you are an international applicant or had a ****ty semester or two- will control your university destiny. You guys are on College Confidential for crying out loud, you are all doing the right things already. Best of luck and if you any questions about MHC, feel free to send me a PM.</p>

<p>Hey YeYe_girl09! Really great to hear your story. It sounds like MHC honestly do read through each application assiduously, and don’t have a set criteria in regard to what an applicant should look like. It’s good to hear that MHC are supportive and have resources readily available in relation to what their students are going through. Looks like they also have plenty of opportunities at hand should you be willing to look for them. I can’t wait to hear back! This place sounds wonderful. </p>

<p>Out of curiosity, were you ED, EDII or RD? I’m hearing us EDII’ers will hear in about a month…</p>

<p>MHC does read through applications very carefully and looks for applicants with potential to succeed (perfect record or not) and take full advantage of those great MHC resources. I’ve been interviewer for international students and highly take note of applicants with potential. </p>

<p>I applied RD as a spring transfer with no prior history of applying to the university and interviewed on-campus.</p>

<p>It does appear to be positive, but I won’t look into it too much. Not long to go until we hear back now! So excited, yet so gut wrenchingly nervous.</p>
