Hello all!

I am a pretty addicted mountain biker deciding between CU-Boulder and Pitt. I don't want to say goodbye to the trails for the next 4 years of my life! How is the biking around the Pittsburgh area? Is it accessible from Pitt? Just wondering, I know it is a pretty random post!
I know the biking at Colorado is solid, lots of great DH.

Thanks for any opinions/info!

Here are some links that may help:

Schenley Park has some trails, and is essentially on-campus. Frick park probably has some better ones and it is only a mile or two away.

Pitt also has a cycling club that does some mountain biking: http://www.pitt.edu/~sorc/cycling/index.html
Specifically, their website says this about Mountain Biking:

“Mountain Bike Trips
Just because Pitt is an urban campus doesn’t mean you can’t ride that mountain or cyclocross bike! We will be taking trips out to local mountain biking spots. Pittsburgh is surrounded by phenomenal riding from Seven Springs to Big Bear to Morraine State Park to Bavington to Boyce Park to Hartwood Acres to etc. etc. etc. There are tons of places within an hour’s drive that you can get to via the Panther Cycling Club. Such trips are FREE to dues paying members and we arrange the transportation for you! Riders of all abilities and disciplines are invited to join!”

thanks for the info! The Pittsburgh area mountain biking scene sounds pretty strong! And I am glad to see that Pitt has its own club

Are there lots of outdoorsy-types at Pitt? I’m a bit nervous about fitting in :P

Biking at CU…I’ve never had the chance to, but I’ve always wanted to bike up the Flatirons trail…just driving up it was intense, cant imagine how much more so on a bike!

I doubt the Pittsburgh mountain biking scene is as strong as Colorado’s though, but it’s there. I think you’ll find outdoorsy types at Pitt, but it is not generally as outdoorsy as CU. CU is probably the most outdoorsy school in the nation. I’m sure you’ll find many like-minded souls at Pitt though, especially if you get into the various clubs and scenes that pertain to your particular interests. It’s pretty diverse, I’m sure you’ll fit in.

im going to cu next year and bought a mountain bike just to commute around campus but i might try mountain biking
here’s a list of some paved/multi-use and unpaved trails

in the daily camera it says “Boulder ranked No. 1 in overall well-being out of 162 large and medium-sized cities. It also topped the list in work experience, rated No. 4 in healthy behaviors, No. 7 in physical health, No. 10 in access to basic needs for a healthy life and No. 27 in emotional health.” boulder is super pedestrian/biker friendly since they’re so green so i’m sure you could a group of mountain bikers to hang out with with no problem

If you want to base your decision solely off mountain biking, go to Western Washington University in Bellingham. Your an hour and a half away from the Mt.Fromme and the North Shore (if you ride DH or FR you know what I’m talking about).

Plus, you have Galbraith Mtn which is like 15 minutes away.

The school is awesome too.
