Forgive me if there is a thread that I could not find on this for the upcoming Fall 2016 Freshman move in day for Rose Hill.
We are coming from out of state (flying) and know that move in day is Aug 28 and that you are given a time slot. Fair enough.
We have other children who attended a university where boxes could not be shipped to campus until 2 weeks into the school year to avoid overwhelming on campus post office. Same with Rose Hill?
We also know that roommate assignments are not given until deep into August (right?). Does our student get the roommate assignment within a few weeks of arrival? Can we ship boxes to our student’s attention once we know the dorm assignment?
I don’t want to contact student life/res life until I have exhausted all other avenues to get these questions answered.
Again, sorry if this is easy to find info. Yours truly is stumped. Hoping that we have at least 10 business days to know our time slot.
Welcome to Fordham. I have a junior and a freshman in Gabelli this year. I think that is very nice that you don’t want to bother resident life , but honestly that’s their job. I’m sure they will be very helpful and at least you will know that the information is accurate. Things change from year to year. 2 years ago my son received his schedule and room assignment the second week of August. But every year is different and this year there is a different freshman dean Good luck and feel free to reach out to me with any questions I will do my best to help.
Welcome to the “Ramily”! As @fordhamfamily stated above it seems to change year to year. My daughter is currently a senior(!) and it seemed like yesterday it was move in. You will get room mate information sometime in August and it will be a good idea to coordinate with the other room mate on big things, like a TV, or fridge. As for shipping boxes ahead of time, I would call ResLife and ask. They will help you answer any questions you might have. Also, if your student ever needs anything, there is a TJ Max and Walgreen’s right across Fordham Road. Also they can hop on the #9 bus (going to 262nd Street, City Line) and get off at W225th Street and there is a Target there for other things. That’s a 20 minute bus ride (I used to live in that area). The New Student Orientation (NSO) and ResLife will help you make move in as stress free as possible. I will also answer questions if you have any. Good luck!!
@mcmom2 There was an email sent to the Fordham email. My daughter was notified on 8/12/13 when she was an incoming freshman. I think notifications have gone out a little bit earlier in the last couple of years. Make sure they go to My.Fordham.edu and sign on and check their emails.
@next2167 I just wanted to let you know something about shipping boxes to your student. The post office is in McGinley, downstairs. Remember they will have to carry the boxes back to their dorm, so try not to pack things too big or too heavy. Unless they will have a friend who will be willing to help carry back stuff, then no problem. Also, if they are assigned Martry’s Court, they will have to lug it up the stairs. Good luck!
our daughter just received her dorm/roommate assignment today and she’s very happy with what she received! It’s all becoming too real, we leave NYC in 12 days! :">
Any hints about move-in day at Lincoln Center? I’m puzzled about the best way to drive in from Maryland. I’m debating whether to stay at a NJ hotel and park near Lincoln Center after drop-off or stay at a hotel near the campus and carry stuff over? (Son is not bringing too much). (Sorry for the highjack).
At LC, you back your car up to the building, they help you empty it quickly into carts, and you have to move your car as soon as it’s empty. They give you a list of local parking garages that give a bit of a discount to Fordham students. At least that’s how it worked five years ago, when I dropped off my shiny new freshman.
At graduation, we stayed overnight at the Hilton in the Meadowlands. Short drive.
Thanks @LeftyLou . After making the long drive, we might want to stay in the city for a few days but will have to figure out what to do with the car. We usually take the bus to NY!
thanks LeftyLou! I see that your daughter minored in theatre. Our daughter is planning on majoring in English but she’s definitely a theatre kid…involved ever since she was small and she has a fabulous singing voice. She just didn’t want to go the MT route. I’m hoping she’ll find plenty to get involved in despite not majoring in it
She can get involved in many of the shows. My daughter didn’t get too involved in Fordham theater, but saw lots of Broadway shows while in school (doing the lottery for cheap tickets!) and she had internships in off-Broadway and also on-Broadway theaters. Living at LC was the perfect location for her.
Make sure your daughter knows that theater minors are required to volunteer to earn credits or points, in places like the costume shop, box office, etc,and they all have to help strike a specific number of shows. Theater majors have to earn more points, if I remember correctly, and minors have to rack up fewer points.
No one told my daughter about that until she was a junior.
She also liked to sing and was in shows since she was little. She went on to sing with the Fordham choir for a couple of years.
