Fordham RH Move-in Tips for Freshman/New Students?

Hello everyone! My son will be attending Fordham's Gabelli business school as a freshman student, and we are excited for him to be part of the Fordham family!

Being from out-of-state, I was wondering if anyone has any tips when he moves into the dorms? Should he get a bike? What are some of the local stores/shops we can go to off-campus for supplies? (We usually go to Target, but I wasn't sure if there was a "Target-like" store nearby?)

Also, for out-of-state students, does Fordham offer summer storage for the large, bulky items? Or are there storage facilities nearby?

Thanks, and appreciate any and all advice!

My S is a junior at Gabelli and is very happy there. I can help you with a few things but hopefully a student can give you more details.
-First, just so you know freshman move-in at Fordham is a great day! Upperclassmen announce the arrive of each freshman and carry everything up to the room for you (unfortunately you are on your own for the rest of the years). By the time your child has checked in, all of the suitcases and boxes are in the room waiting to be unpacked. It is an exciting and fun day.
-I know that there are stores around to pick up supplies and toiletries (because I know my S buys stuff near campus) but I don’t know any details. I’m guessing the prices are higher than you will find at home, but sometimes the convenience is worth it. I do know that there is a Sears and Best Buy in easy walking distance (we had to run over and get a longer cable for the TV one year). If nobody chimes in with details, you can ask ResLife in advance or when you move in there will be lots of people around to direct you.
-I have not seen bikes around Fordham. It is a pretty compact campus so you can easily walk everywhere.
-We live close enough so my S hasn’t used it but there is some deal with a storage facility for summer storage of items for Fordham students. No idea of the price etc.
Welcome to Fordham. I hope your S has a great experience!

There’s a TELCO department store right up Fordham Rd. as well as a Cee and Cee’s. Target is a twenty minute bus ride away on the BX 9.

Thanks for the tips! Sounds like we’ll have an easy time on move-in day.

Wow, really? This will be a big contrast to when we help move in our daughter into her dorm that day before. :-)

Again thanks and we’re looking forward to it! I’ve seen on Fordham’s website that it looks like move-in day is Sunday, Aug. 28th.

One suggestion - make sure you all go to Father McShane’s welcome speech on move-in day. Hope your son enjoys Fordham!
