Move in day

Good luck with move in, first years! I got settled in at my apartment today  It was nice to miss the move-in weekend traffic, but it’s a little quiet. Have fun tomorrow/Saturday!!

So, any ideas on the best time to get there? Everyone I know is getting there 1st thing in the morning. Perhaps it would be better to wait until the big rush is over and get there a little later. Thoughts?

I got here at 9:45 (opened at 10) and it worked out great. Don’t make the mistake my parents did and park where their car can be trapped in. Also, set up your fan IMMEDIATELY. I’m sweating my, well yea I’m sweating and it’s hot!

Congratulations on moving in!!!

Does anyone know what size shelving unit (max) will fit in the open corner of McCormick dorms?

We used a 48" wide x 12" deep.

For McCormick, at least a couple of the dorms have built in shelving units. If you live in an old dorm without built in units, they can handle a very tall shelving unit in one corner - just make sure it is strong enough to handle the height and weight. If I remember correctly, the old dorms have about 9 feet or higher ceilings. Some shelving units can be tall theoretically, but they fall apart at a 7 or 8 foot height. The taller units also need at least 2 people to assemble.

I don’t know the exact dimensions, but the corner should be able to handle a deeper shelving unit than 12 inches.

Also, the old dorms windows are very big and can typically accommodate 2 fans.

Please check the student housing website for the latest info - some info on this website may be out of date.

When I picked up my son at the end of the year, I asked him about what items we had sent that he never used. He opened up a huge drawer full of stuff in unopened packaging.

And don’t forget the duct tape. The screen in my son’s window had a gap at the bottom, and we were able to seal it up.

Last year, the rush was after 10 AM. After you unload, please move the car to the stadium lot or wherever else you are directed, to make room for others.

If you go on the housing website each dorm gives very specific dimensions of the room, furniture, window, etc.

This article just showed up on Yahoo… I can’t comment on bed risers (are they still illegal because of the captain’s beds?) but I have had one of those double closet lower hang racks since high school and I still use it.

[Everything you need for your college dorm room - Yahoo!](http://shopping.yahoo.com/news/everything-you-need-for-your-college-dorm-room.html)

Thanks! We found a great unit that is 20 inches deep and were hoping it would fit.

Hazel, thanks for the info!

I have had two sons actually live in the McCormick Road dorms and in as much the dimensions say one thing the physical layout is not as giving. For two people in that small of space a 20" deep shelving unit may be too deep. FWIW.

So the housing website gave us our addresses:

Can we ship things to our dorm room and pick them up at move-in? I arrive in UVA via plane, so I don’t have too much room to carry things - what I do have (that can’t be checked) will need to be shipped.

Yes, you can have things shipped for pickup at move in. Check with housing to see how far in advance you can start sending things.

Also, don’t forget that students are eligible for free Amazon Prime memberships with your .edu email. I think it’s for 6mths (it used to be a year). This gives you free 2-day shipping on almost everything they have. It’s exceptionally handy for everything from textbooks to dorm supplies.
