Move in Day

So what is move in day like on East Campus? Is it crazy with traffic? Do you receive timed arrival times? Can you park anywhere near the buildings?

For summer? Or fall?

There are approved parking spaces/places and the move in website (welcome week) has directions specific to the building to which you are heading. Summer traffic will be vastly complicated by the fact that many of State College’s roads are under construction in one way or another. Do not rely on a gps, use the welcome site directions

[Welcome Week > Arrival Schedule](http://www.welcomeweek.psu.edu/WelcomeWeek/UP/Arrival-Schedule.cfm)

You will be ticketed/towed/booted if you park in the wrong place, don’t even try. In the fall, College Ave is closed down to one lane in order to allow people to double park for unloading. It’s hectic, but not horrible. There are lots and lots of people to help unload your car. The earlier you arrive, the better.

If I could give people from away a single piece of move-in advice it would be: Don’t go to WalMart or Target. That whole “we’ll pick it up there” idea is nuts. Those stores (both WalMarts, Target, the grocery stores) are CRAZY busy.

Thanks Greenbutton… I am talking about the fall and I did hear about all of the construction on the roads leading into UP. Hope it’s cleared up by middle of August. As far as shopping on move in day… not!!!

It’s crowded and hectic, but with an air of excitement and generally cheerful anticipation. You may be fortunate enough to snag one of the carts, which makes the process much easier, but maybe not. Don’t be too worried about stated time limits on parking , etc. they don’t enforce strictly on move in days, at least in our experience. Be realistic about what can fit into the rooms in East. McClanahan’s stocks an impressive array of merchandise, so that’s a good choice within walking distance for picking up forgotten items. And I agree with the previous post about following the directions mailed to you , traffic patterns may be changed from the usual.

Otoh, don’t think you can leave your car parked by the dorm for any length of time. Once you’ve unloaded you’ll have to move it to one of the more distant lots on campus or in town.
