i'm considering it strongly

I can not believe many of the comments left by ignorant people. First off, I am a white woman and have been living in the Bronx for 10 years now (near Fordham University). The campus is amazing and the area is amazing. Individuals are not stabbed on the streets randomly as many may think. Living in the Bronx has been great and I have never had any problems. Little Italy, Bronx Zoo, Botanical Garden are just some of the amazing things in the Bronx. As for the crime, I will have to let you know that many kidnappings occur in suburban quite areas where neighbors KNOW EACHOTHER. Enough said I am annoyed by many thoughts people put in here.

As an applicant admitted to Fordham EA, I was at first not sure about how safe Rose Hill was. One visit to the school changed my perception. However, I would like for people to know that safety is a matter of smart choices, and often times luck. "Safe" campuses are not without violence as two recent cases at Virginia Tech and Illinois showed. Although, I will be attending NYU's Stern instead of Fordham next year, I am in a good position to say that the campus is safe as long as you (the person going there) are not an idiot.

Living most of my life and the bronx and attending Fordham (at one point as a commuter, now as a resident) I can say that safety is only an issue for the idiots who don't take precaution at night. Every month the security department will send out 2-3 mass e-mails to everyone regarding a couple of incidents that occurred (whether it's sexual assault, muggings, beatings, etc.). I actually laugh at some of those e-mails (the way they are worded is what's funny, not the actual violence that occurred). One would think that if you make it to a university of any sort you would be somewhat smart about walking alone at night. Some of the stories mass e-mailed are just straight out ridiculous. It's not like the students deserve it either, but they are just asking to get mugged or worse in the situations they put themselves in.

True story of a freshman this year. His first night, he went to a bar nearby with a group of other freshmen and he got so wasted that he wandered off the streets. His buddies tried bringing him back but to no avail. Next day he's moving his stuff out. The kid ended up at a hospital after getting a beat down from a group of thugs near Third Ave sometime at 3-4am. There's other stories of girls (usually 2) walking alone at night (NOT SMART) and getting assaulted. There was another story of a student who walked in shorts and flip-flops in broad daylight to a the Commerce bank right across Fordham U. He was mugged right there and then as he left the ATM. Why did this happen to him? He made it plain obvious he was a Fordham Student (a student of a school which costs $$$$). The surrounding area prays on students who are naive and don't know any better. There's also stories of couples getting mugged at night coming from parties. And so on. But you know what, this happens anywhere. You just have to be smart about your surroundings. Unfortunately, not many students here are very smart when it comes to that.

I've been mugged before by the way. This had nothing to do with the Fordham area. But it was pure stupidity on my part and I laid myself wide open for them to mug me when I had a chance to walk away unharmed.

If you've made it to Fordham (or any other school for that matter) all I can say is just be smart about walking at night. If you're a girl, carry some sort of pepper spray and don't walk around in a pair as that doesn't make you any less vulnerable to getting attacked. Most importantly, don't make it so obvious you're from Fordham. You will become an instant target.

I agree with all of your points, BP. No matter the school, kids have to be smart and aware of their surroundings. It's not smart to stagger back to campus, drunk, at 3 AM -- whether it's Fordham, NYU or Georgetown. That's just asking for trouble, IMHO.

Fordham provides RamVan service 24-hours a day from the subway stations and, correct me if I'm wrong, they run a loop through the Belmont area.

Just as an aside, Commerce Bank put an ATM machine in the McGinley Center this year. My son has a Commerce account, and I'm glad he no longer have to go to the ATM machine on Fordham Rd. As close as it was to campus, I didn't like the idea of him dashing there for a quick ATM withdrawal.
