I'm looking for schools in NYC and Fordham is on my radar. I would be only apply to the Bronx campus because that's where the program I want to study is located.

One worry I have is the safety issue, specifically, the situation outside of campus. Are incidents like these below (assaults, robberies) common at Fordham?

I'm asking because If I do pick Fordham, I would most likely have to live off campus to save money. I would imagine I would be making late night trips back and to and from campus after studying/clubs class, etc. What kind of safety programs does Fordham provide to students who live off campus/socialize in the surrounding area?

Living off campus doesnt necessarily save money. Fordham guarantees housing for four years.

Fordham is safe, gated and a lovely place to attend school. The incidents reported of cell phone thefts and robberies almost always (99%) occur late at night, someone walking alone and often drunk.

Students go out in groups. Students eat in Little Italy without incident. I’ve done it a lot of times.

Colleges dont like to discuss this issue but it occurs at ALL urban campuses and almost always off campus venues, and sometimes even in suburban and rural colleges too.

Fordham has more women on campus then men. Its perfectly safe and if you are smart, and dont make stupid mistakes (see above) then you will be just fine.

The Bronx is embraced by many students who do internships and help out the less fortunate.

Fordham is a wonderful school and its students are safe and secure and come away with a superior education, self assured and focused in their lives.

A number of my friends moved off campus during sophomore and junior years primarily to save money but also to get away from the ResLife restrictions. I also know someone who transferred to Fordham and lived in one of the off campus dorms for her first semester. People tend to live within a few blocks of campus. Nobody I know has had any problems that I heard about (and I think I would have heard )and I have not had any issues going to their apartments. There are some apartments that are literally across the street from campus. But you do have to be smart – I don’t walk off campus alone if it is really late or if I’ve been drinking. If you can live on campus for a year it isn’t a bad idea so you can get a really good sense of the area and where you’d want to live and find some people you’d be happy living with for the next bunch of years. But if you can’t do that financially, then check out the neighborhood carefully. I’d suggest looking for an apartment in the direction of Arthur Avenue, around where the off campus dorms are-- I have some friends who live on Lorillard if that helps.

The campus and area around it is safe unless you walk off the main roads into the ‘hood’, especially at night. Then you’re just a sitting duck waiting to be robbed.

Can someone besides Sovereigndebt (and the users Endlessrecession/algorescousin/swansong/catfishin) respond to the assertion made that “living off campus doesnt necessarily save money.” I would like a second opinion.

Ideally, I would love to live on campus, but I was under the assumption that Fordham’s on-campus housing and board (15k) would be far more expensive than finding an apartment off-campus to share with with roommates.

Do the math. This is New York City. A decent (not luxury) 1 bedroom apartment is $1,700+ per month. Leases run a year which means you are still paying in the summer when you are most likely home. Food isn’t cheap in New York. Add in all your incidentals like pots/pans, shower curtains, furniture, cable TV, renters insurance, ect… and your #'s will run up real quickly.

$15,000 may sound expensive for Room & Board, but this aint Kansas!

Wow 1,700 for a 1 bedroom? I thought rents would be lower in the Bronx. I would also get a 6,000 grant so I would have around $21,000 to work with if I did choose to live off campus.

I think that $1700 number is very high. I know that a lot of people move off campus because it is cheaper. And most people share larger apartments with friends instead of getting 1BRs which may also make it less expensive.

hipsterforlife, I can’t answer for the Bronx (my daughter is at LC and I have another daughter at a college in Manhattan) but in Manhattan, which I presume is more expensive than the Bronx, you can save money by living off-campus, and many students do. It is possible to get a shared apartment in which you will pay $600-$800 a month for a bedroom (but shared common area) if you are willing to live in, say, Washington Heights. Of course you need to factor in the cost of a Metro Card and food. Food costs are highly individual, depending on your habits. Most students do sublet their apartments during the summer if they leave town.

From that link, “If you don’t mind finding 3 roommates in New York, the most affordable four bedrooms rent could be split to $423 per room.” Sounds pretty good. :)

I don’t think anyone answered hipsters original question. Are there any safety programs in place? Does security offer rides at night to private apartments?

Never lived anywhere else. Spent a lifetime going to the zoo and the gardens and the restaurants on Arthur Avenue. Bronx Fordham campus is lovely…really beautiful and green and nice architecture and great sports fields. The surrounding neighborhood is not great…E. Fordham Road, Southern Blvd…nowhere that you’d want to be after dark. Arthur Avenue…the “little Italy” of the Bronx is very old, established neighborhood that’s managed to maintain alot of charm with families and schools and churches. Definately an urban school…but not like NYU urban because it’s sort of removed from things. If you had roommates you definately would not have to spend 1700 for an apt.

I am a current RH student and I have never had problems in the neighborhood – but you do need to be smart about it (ex. don’t walk around alone and drunk late at night etc.). It is great to have the restaurants/bars so close to campus. And yes, RH is very different from NYU – we are not in Manhattan, but we do have a beautiful traditional campus. I would suggest that anyone interested in Fordham come and visit the campus as well as the surrounding area and decide for themselves if Fordham is a good/comfortable fit.

Thanks for the replies. These comments have assured me somewhat, but articles from Fordham’s campus newspaper and news reports about various incidents off campus are a bit unnerving. I think the best bet is for me to visit a few times and get a feel for myself.

Also, if someone can answer my original question about off-campus safety programs i would be much appreciative as well.

The Security Department and Office of Student Affairs offer a late-night neighborhood shuttle service to transport students and staff to and from the Rose Hill campus. The van provides passengers with a safe, reliable and comfortable mode of transportation. A security guard operates this van on a regular route with pickup and discharge at designated locations. The shuttle is offered free of charge and operates 7 days per week, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. The van departs the campus every 30 minutes from the front of the Security Office. A second van is used on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to augment this service for our students. Students and staff boarding the van must present a valid identification card. Members of the Fordham community accept full responsibility for their guests and must comply with all University policies and directions from the driver/guard.

I was wondering where Prospective students could access “Fordham Security Incident Alerts” that have been mentioned here by several students (the ones I am referring to see below). All I could find was just vague numbers/stats.

I know of no school that makes its internal security alerts open to the public.

You have noted your concerns about security at Fordham on this board just a few posts down. In fact, that is where you got the security post above. As I noted on your original post, I am a student at RH and I feel very safe on and off campus although I do exercise caution (not walking around alone at night drunk etc.) off campus. Common sense/ Street smarts is important when going off campus at Fordham as it is an urban campus. However, every college has some problems. My sister is at a smaller suburban college and they have had incidents on and off campus as well.

Based on the fact that this is your second post on the same topic in a short period of time, you seem to feel uncomfortable with Fordham’s location and security. If that is the case, perhaps Fordham is simply not the school for you. There are many fine schools located in rural/suburban locations if that makes you feel more comfortable.
