We are trying to book flights to help my S move in next August and just wondering if classes start on August 23rd when is the best day to move in? Thanks for your help.

The dorms only open for sophomores and higher the day before classes start. So I believe the move-in day is Sun.

Actually sophomores can move in later in the afternoon on that Saturday before, so that would be the 21st. They don’t let upperclassmen move in until Freshman move-in is complete, which is supposed to be by 11 AM IIRC. But they still didn’t let the upperclassmen check in until 4 PM, because there is the convocation ceremony. So you could fly in Saturday during the morning or early afternoon and still have plenty of time to get his stuff and get it to campus by 4 PM, or have it delivered if that is your arrangement. At least that is what happened in 2009. Sunday might be more “peaceful”, or not.

Ok - thank you I had no idea. That certainly helps with our planning! Also, are there storage places near Tulane where he could store his dorm things over the summer and how is that arranged? Any names of places would be extremely helpful. Thanks again!

There was a thread on this last year, and there are absolutely places like that. I think one even has full service picking up and delivering back. Jym, can you help out here? If she is away or something, I will dig it out tomorrow.

You were absolutely right! I checked my flights for Aug last year and we indeed arrived on Sat, Aug 22.

For Storage, we ended up using Public Storage on I-10 Service Road. It was one of the furthest from the campus but the nearby ones were either sold out, or very expensive by the time we reserved. It’s very new, clean and safe, so we would not hesitate to use it again.

We did rent a car so distance was not an issue.

Here is the thread. The company that picks up and delivers isn’t mentioned by name, but I would think the Housing department at Tulane would know if I cannot find it other ways. If not, my D and I will have to deal with this in a few months, and I will post what I find out. That will be way in advance for you since you don’t have to worry about it until the summer of 2011.

Thanks for all your posts and that thread was very informative! I know i’m thinking way far ahead but never too early to plan.

They say that soph move-in doesn’t start til 4, but in actuality they really let you start late morning/midday on Saturday after the freshmen move in. We were hanging out in the hotel when DS got a call from one of his roommates around 11ish that he was already moving in. So we packed up our stuff and arrived on campus around noonish, with no problems moving in or parking, despite the construction on McAlister. Worked fine. We then headed off to our obligatory shopping spree for extra “stuff” at the Walmart on Tchopatoulas (sp?) and were back by late afternoon. It was actually smoother than freshman move-in as there was no crazy mad house of everyone arriving at once. Piece of cake.

I don’t recall the storage company names, as we didnt use them (took all but his fridge home with us, and a friend stored the fridge). But yes, you will get several mailings form storage places in the spring. They were there delivering stuff to the kids rooms when we were moving in this (soph) yr, so that looked pretty nifty (especially since, unl;ike freshman yr, no one is there helping you haul your stuff up to your room). I also recall watchig them pick up the stuff last spring when DS was moving out. The kids had the boxes delivered to their rooms. They packed and labelled them, and they were picked up by the appropriate storage company. Might be more expensive than the “do it yourself” places, but it sure looked convenient!

Ok Thanks again for the info. I will tell my S to look out for the fliers!

lagr42,
You’ll also get fliers mailed to your house. No worries!

How do the current freshmen choose their housing for next year? Does someone come to them to get their housing & roommate requests or do the current Freshmen need to be proactive? If so, who do they contact to request their housing & roommates for next year?
