For students and their families next move-in …

If you drive in, consider staying in or near Edgewater, NJ. It would be simple to pick up items there, drive across the George Washington Bridge, which is just a few minutes away, then down the Westside Highway to campus.

In Edgewater there’s an easily manageable suburban mall with a Target, BB&B, Old Navy, TJMaxx, as well as other stores. There’s also a Trader Joe’s and a large supermarket (Mitsuwa) that specializes in Asian groceries near this mall.

(One can see this mall from Riverside Park, a block from the Barnard campus. Just look across the Hudson.)

Also, driving in town is not that bad, as long as you know where you’re going. And, if parking on the street, you understand the parking signs and alternate side parking rules. Remember “no right turns on red” in any of the boroughs. And, be careful because pedestrians jaywalk with impunity.

We ended up staying in the Poconos, around exit 302 off of I-80. We had a hard time finding a hotel with available rooms so if I were doing that again, I would make reservations well in advance. Since we had the 11-12 move in time, it worked out fine. We left the hotel around 8:45 and were at Barnard at 10:45. People around us had been waiting in their chalk squares for over an hour, got tired of waiting and started carrying things up themselves. As a result, when OLs and carts showed up to help someone, they were already gone, so they just started moving us, well ahead of the hour wait time that others had dealt with. It took two trips, but two different OLs were looking for people to help and our block had emptied out a lot so they both helped us. We missed the lunches and all the talks and meet and greets but that was ok. We got things up to the room, organized everything but her clothes and then she showed us around the campus. We walked down Broadway and got some lunch, made a quick stop to see the “steps” at Columbia and said our good byes. We drove straight through on the way home, but there were three drivers and we got home around 2 am. I wouldn’t have done much differently if I were doing it again. She’ll be using the summer storage company so we won’t have that to deal with again, really.

Curious mom of newly accepted Barnard '19. Grateful for this information. Do any more recent parents (2018) know if much has changed vis-a-vis the move-in process?

My daughter is still there (a junior now) and nothing has changed for the freshman move in process yet! Congrats on your daughter’s acceptance!

Hello, I realize that it’s probably bad etiquette to bump such an old thread, but I was wondering if it would be feasible to transport items from BB&B to campus via the subway. I’m attending CUE, which starts a week before move in day, and I was told that Barnard students will stay in our permanent rooms for CUE. We live far away, so we’re flying there. Would it be worth the hassle for me and my parents to get stuff from BB&B on CUE move in day and go on the subway, or should I just wait for the shuttle and haul my stuff myself a week later?
We shipped several boxes UPS from our home in Texas, ordered BBB type items from Amazon, flew with a small folding dolly in our luggage, stayed in a nearby NYC hotel and had an easy time of it all just wheeling our daughter’s things from the mail room to her dorm, avoiding all of the parking/BBB shuttles/chalk squares, etc. It was a fun, exciting day spent folding sweaters into drawers and mastering the art of the command strip. Relax and enjoy the start of your adventure and don’t let sweat the details. If you forget something just scoot down to the hardware store on Broadway or ship it up later.
My daughter had things delivered from the hardware store before too- boxes and packing tape when she was packing to leave! I don’t want to guess how much she paid for that but… it’s possible.
