Moving Day

It was the last week-end in Sept. (I think). Yes it was set up in the Ithaca Commons area (downtown).

I think it's around the last weekend in September, and it is Ithaca, at the Commons. Daughter and I stumbled upon it by accident when we visited Cornell for the first time in 2006. It was very nice, and we could hardly imagine her being accepted to Cornell (it was the first school we visited, and she knew then and there that she would never find another place so perfect for her, and she didn't!) and getting to go again. So that's why it will be special for us to go together, now that she will be a student in the fall! :)

anybody have any cheap recommendations for hotels for orientation weekend in the cortland area? THANKS =]

Just curious, do the majority of students have parents with them on moving day? My mom says she doesn't feel like spending an extra ticket for herself, and she'd rather save the money to visit me later in the year on days that are less hecktic.

I think it's better or more useful for your mom to go with you on the move in day. It is hard to be there by yourself. It is hectic, and that's why it's helpful for her to be there. Almost everyone has their parents there. I think it's rather depressing otherwise. Not as many parents go up for parents weekend.

We had a lovely group brunch in the Statler on the Sunday of move in weekend. The boys from my son's townhouse/dorm and all their parents and sibs (as well as a very special guest). We were 18 people or so all together and the Statler gave us a private room. My son was rooming with other freshman lacrosse players so we all had a connection before move-in day and it was a really nice time.

BOTH my parents are coming -___- but I'm kind of glad because I need more people so I can have a higher luggage count on the plane =]] HAHAHAH.

oh hey! I never thought of it in that way. Maybe I'll make her go now...muwahhaa jk. Yeah, I'm thinking of just going on a major Target shopping spree in Ithaca the week of move-in instead of shipping TOO many things over

Practically everyone has a parent or some other designated drudge with them to help out.

Parents are very useful because they either have cars or can rent them at the airport. Rental car companies do not want to do business with 18-year-olds, and it would be a pain for you to have to return a rental car to the airport anyhow. Having a car is particularly handy if you will find it necessary to spend a night in a motel before moving in. (If you are assigned to the 8 to 11 am move-in slot, a motel room is almost essential, and you will probably have to get one quite a few miles from Cornell.) Parents can also watch your stuff while you're getting your keys and getting signed into the dorm, and they can be sent to the store to get anything you forgot. Also, if you can convince them that they can manage to survive for two or three days in Ithaca with only a change of underwear, you can use most of their luggage allotment on the plane for your stuff.

It's not essential to have someone with you, though. It's possible to have most of your stuff shipped and just bring the usual amount of luggage on the airplane. But you would have to rely heavily on taxis to get around, and you would have to be extra sure that you never leave your possessions out of your sight.

If you can't have a parent go with you, could you travel to Cornell with another freshman who lives near you at home? You could split the cost of a hotel room (if you need one) and taxis, and you could watch out for each other's possessions.

Slightly confused...

Is moving day August the 17th? (Don't look at me, heard that from a friend's friend...)

I know the Orientation is on the 22nd, but it also makes more sense for us to actually get there before we "orient" ourselves...right?

Yes yes get there earlyyyyyy. The orientation is much like a disorientation haha and it is very very hectic. You want to be settled into Ithaca before you get "oriented" to Cornell.

Move-in day is Friday August 22nd. You will not be allowed to move-in to the dorms before then. That day you will move all of your stuff in and get settled a bit and orientation activities will start that evening. Don't worry about it, most people are in the same boat and you will get used to Cornell very quickly.

On move-in day you have to move in at the time slot assigned by first letter of your last name as follows:

Last name begins with: Arrive between the hours of:
A-G 11:00AM-2:00PM
H-O 2:00PM-5:00PM
P-Z 8:00AM-11:00AM

I read somewhere else that you can register at Bartel Hall before you move in so if you have a later time slot, you can get registration done first.
