Hi!
I’m a sophomore that is moving from a school in an international location to a school in Texas, where I will be a junior next year. I took Algebra 1 in 7th grade, Geometry in 8th grade, Advanced Algebra 2 in 9th grade, and AP Calculus AB in 10th grade (I skipped Precalculus, but ended with an A in AP calc). However, I have looked at course selection for public schools that I will most likely be attending next year, and they all require Geometry in High School. I took it in middle school, do I have to repeat it? Thank you! I really can’t submit my grade from 8th grade either because I didn’t really put in a lot of effort into the class since it was middle school, and I picked up my grades in high school. Another problem is that apparently I cannot take AP Calculus BC next year (11th grade) since I have already taken AP Calc AB. What should I do, as I really wanted to take this class? thanks!
No you don’t have to repeat it, since you already have credit for it in middle school. You will most likely be able to transfer your credits, but keep in mind this varies among schools.
Why do you want to take two years of calculus? That’s just showing colleges that you’re either after the AP math credit or you are not taking advantage or higher level math courses. My advice is to see if the high schools you’re looking at offer a higher level, “beyond BC calculus” course such as Calc 3 (Multivariable calc), then Linear Algebra, then Differential Equations (if you get that far).

Look into Dual Enrollment…that is where you take classes at your local Community College while you are in HS.Looka at Calc 2, Multivariable, Differential equations and Linear Algebra.
Thank you! @bopper @chanoo2003 i will look into those!
I agree, welcome to Texas! Not sure where you are here, but my school offers Dual Enrollment Multivariable and AP Statistics for more upper-level math courses. I’m not sure why you cannot take BC Calculus (AB and BC are very different).
If you haven’t, confirm with your new high school guidance regarding taking Cal BC. It sounds like it might be AB/BC and they may not want to give you credit for AB all over again? Calculus 2 in a dual enrollment class would be good if offered. I wouldn’t skip BC/Calc 2 for other math classes if you don’t have to.
My high school requires algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2 for graduation. However they realize many students take at least algebra 1 before 9th grade. They don’t get credit or show the classes on the high school transcript but starting at a higher level implies to colleges you’ve done the others prior to 9th grade. In terms of credits though student still need 4 math credits taken during actual high school years.
I csn see why they wouldn’t let you do AP Calc BC after you took AP Calc AB. The first half of AP Calc BC for you would be a cakewalk because it’s basically the entire AP Calc AB course. Since you’re three years ahead of a normal math student, you should probably take the course that goes after AP Calc. Typically, many schools will have a course you take if you’ve completed that Calc course, so take that course to show that’s you’re still challenging yourself mathematically. Senior year, I would recommend you take AP Stats because aside from AP Calc courses, this is the only other AP math you can take. Both courses will look really good on your resume.
Thank you @VI , @momtogirls2 , @simberry2
I talked to my counselor and they decided to make an exception since the school does not offer classes after Calc BC so there was nothing else I could take. thanks! yeah I can see why they would not let me take BC after AB lol
