I'm seriously considering attending school in Boston, and everything sounds great with the exception of what I've heard of the weather. I live in Tampa, Florida, where it is almost ALWAYS humid and sunny (I needed to wear my Uggs for about a week in the "winter"). I don't mind the cold, I actually prefer it at times, and every time I've visited Colorado I've loved the snow. However, I know visiting and living in an area are very different. Has anyone moved from a remotely warm area up to Boston or any surrounding area? Looking for some insight on what to realistically expect so I can determine if I can cut it or not up there.

PS- I visited colleges surrounding NYC and Philadelphia during spring break (Early March) and it was really rainy, cold, and windy, but I didn’t find it too bad, although it was the most miserable weather i’ve ever experienced. Is that pretty much the worst it gets to be?

Boston has pretty mild winters except for the snow, sleet, slush and wind. You just bundle up. Learn to ski, snowboard, skate and drive in low gear using the friction on your engine rather than the friction on the road (of which there isn’t much).

Actually, the temperature doesn’t get THAT low THAT often because of the moderating influence of being near the ocean. The wind can sometimes make it feel really cold, but you just dress for it and it’s not a big deal. Of course the occasional nor’easter picks up that same ocean and dumps it on your car in the form of two feet of white stuff, but you just deal. Going outside after a good fall of snow has a pretty nice feel to it.

Summers can’t be beat though!

My daughter enjoys the cold and especially the snow up in Boston. But coming from Charlotte, NC the bigger adjustment for her (and it will be even greater for the OP) is how early it gets dark during the winter. The further you go north, the less hours of sunlight in the winter. The further you go east within a timezone, the earlier the sunrise and sunset.

Two Ds in Metro Boston, coming from Georgia. They both went native quickly and they adore Boston. D1 has graduated from college and wants to move back there.

This has been extremely helpful thank you to all! I now feel a lot more confident about going up there. I will no longer let all the negative nancys put doubts in my head! Thanks
