I wanted to get some information about the process at Rice when freshmen move in during O-Week. It seems like on the program the parents have to do separate things from the students, and we part ways kind of early. Will there be time for them to help us move in and get things we forgot or do we just dump our stuff and worry about it later? I have always hoped my sister would help me set up my room. How does it all work? Do things vary by residential college?

You should have a couple hours to move in and whatnot. Move in begins in the morning (in different time-slots determined by last name), and parents don’t get split off from students until after lunch.

Your advisors will have everything in your room in a matter of minutes (usually before you even get to the room, as you have to pick up keys and usually have an opportunity to meet the masters and RAs, have some snacks/drinks, etc.). You’ll have probably 2-4 hours between arriving and going to lunch, which I found was plenty of time to get the big stuff set up. I unpacked the rest of my stuff and moved things around a bit over the course of the week. (You’ll probably realize that the way you thought you wanted to set things up isn’t the way you end up wanting them.)

I helped my son move in last year and it took my husband and I about 6 hours to move in all my son’s things and set everything up. We live in CA so had to buy everything in Texas when we got there and many things had to be put together and it took much time. We opted not to do the parent activities and stayed in my son’s dorm to finish setting everything up. No one seemed to mind and my son had a few breaks so he was able to spend time with us and help. I just didn’t feel comfortable in leaving him and flying home until everything was in its place!

I helped my son move in last year … or tried to. His O-Week advisor met us in the parking lot and took most of the stuff up on a cart in two trips. Son was completely uninterested in having us stick around (he didn’t say that but I could tell) so we left after about 30 minutes. I don’t know how it could possibly take 6 hours, but maybe my son just didn’t have that much stuff.

And we just ordered some things online after he moved in if we discovered there was something else he needed. Ordered and shipped an iron and ironing board for example. His college was great about receiving and storing shipped items, even big stuff.

Once we find out which college our student will be in, will we be able to order and ship stuff before their arrival for O-week?

^^i think that could depend on the college, although a call to housing would verify.

Probably depends on the college. Mine told us not to last year.
