Moving mid semester would I lose in state tuition (NY)

First of all, I’m not a parent, but this looked like the best forum section to ask this question. So I want to keep in state tuition while I move cause I would only be gone for 2-4 months. Would I lose my in state residency? I would be doing an online course. I cant find any policies or anything on the colleges website. This would be a NY college so if you know the requirements I would appreciate any help. I’ve read if I move I lose residency the day I move but they should let me finish the semester or they will give a refund? Im so confused. I’ve also seen as long as I keep paying tuition and keep going even out of state it should keep going but im not sure.

Thanks

Don’t change your residency. You can be gone for many reasons for a short period and not lose residency, right to vote, need to change driver’s license, etc. Many people from NY go to Florida for the winter and still remain NY residents. Do that.

How do I not change my residency if that would be my address? Or would I just have to continue using my NY address?

Who will be living at your NY address? A parent?

Why are you moving for just 2 or 4 months??

That doesn’t really sound like a “move”…that just sounds like a temporary assignment…like a business trip or long vacation.

Just because you’d be living at another address for a SHORT TIME does NOT make that your permanent address. That would be a short-term address…a temporary address.

In your other thread you said you want to move OOS to live with a friend and help pay bills. I’m not sure you can claim NYS residency if you have bills in your name in another state.

Yes my parents will be living in NY. Yes you’re pretty spot on with this but would a short term address interfere? Im moving to just “get away” for awhile and help my friend out.

It doesn’t sound like there would be bills in this student’s name.

This is more along the lines of going for a short time to help a sick relative. That isn’t moving.

Keep your parents address.

That doesn’t mean that you can have mail temporarily forwarded to another address. However, it’s probably better to not forward your mail, but just have your parents let you know if something important shows up.

But there would be NO NEED to change your drivers license…and no need to get different car insurance

What if I were to find a part time job there in the mean time there? Would I screw it up with that? I really appreciate all the help!

Ask directly at your Bursar’s office. Colleges have different rules. Family friends sent their daughter to a in-state public. But the parents had to move the summer before the daughter’s matriculation due to a job change. The college is allowing in-state status to her for her entire four years even though her home address has changed.

Update I messaged the Bursar and he said with the residency certificate im good for 3 semesters and thats wonderful news and I brought up the out of state thing and he said it shouldnt be a problem but it may raise questions. Thanks all again.
