While I plan to spend freshman year in the dorms at Columbia, I may move back home to avoid sophomore doubles and save money (I'm an insomniac with random sleep hours. Having a roommate would be a huge burden for us both). My parents are on Columbia faculty and we live in Columbia housing. Would doing this jeopardize my junior year housing?

since your parents r columbia faculty isn’t everything completely free? so couldn’t you just pick a double with a friend of yours…basically not live there and move back in with your parents for that one year. this would guarantee you still retain guaranteed housing the following year and your friend gets a SWEET deal (double all to himself)

I get free tuition, but not room and board. Still, it’s an interesting idea, staying days in the dorm and nights at home. And I have friends at Columbia I’d love to help out that way.

I’m pretty sure that by the end of freshman year you will enjoy your freedom enough that you will not want to lose it by moving back home. Even if your parents are the most lax parents in the world, it’s still odd and you’d lose a lot of socializing time with kids your own age.

Dont forget: one of the major reasons you go to columbia is for the network after graduation. If you only know a hand full of people during your time, aren’t you kind of wasting it?

$6k/yr is pretty cheap compared to $50k/yr.

I would live out most of your freshman year and then decide if you want to move back home. I knew two people in your situation and both opted for the dorms - although one of them would occasionally drag his laundry home to be done by his mom, freshman year.

Cerberus - that might’ve been the RA you had who’s a mutual acquaintance of ours.

Moving out of housing may jeopardize your options for junior year. I suggest applying to live in the LLC (Hartley or Wallach) your sophomore year. You can get a pretty nice single there, and if you explain your reason your chances might be even better.
