I'm a senior in high school this year (in Minnesota), and although I'll definitely be asking my friend that's a freshman in Rhode Island what her moving strategies are, I'm wondering what everyone else has to say. I'm planning on going to school in either Maryland, Virginia, or Georgia and lately I've been looking at all the crap in my room and thinking, "How the hell is all of this going to fit in my car??"
My mom's talked about renting a small U-Haul and driving my vehicle (Ford Explorer) as well, and then just having her and whoever else in my family helps me move fly home, but I'm wondering how much people actually brought with them their freshman year and how they transported it (it doesn't even have to be across the country, though that would help even more). Thanks!

The first thing is to cut all of your stuff down. You don’t need to bring everything in your room–you really, really don’t. Bring only things that you need or would use regularly, and consider buying things when you get there if you need something big. You don’t need as many things as you think you do, since supplies and other things that you’re going to use can be purchased at school. Also consider swapping out wardrobes during breaks so you don’t have to bring clothes for the winter and the spring at the same time.

We had a van that all of my stuff (+ me and my parents) fit in. My sister went to college across the country (from HI to DC), so she flew with my parents. They packed what they could in boxes, and then they bought anything big that they couldn’t bring.
