MPP Admissions

Anyone else out there applying to MPP programs?

I graduated in 2003 from the University of Southern California with a B.S. in Public Policy and Management and I have a 3.84 overall GPA (3.95 major). My GRE score though is very low--only 1050 combined. I have good WE--3 years at United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Can anyone comment on my "stats"? I am looking into GWU, American, Georgetown, UChicago, UMichigan, UCLA. Any comments??

Thanks!

Hello,
Depends on the program you like. When I finished my BA from San Francisco State University I applied to 10 schools, and 5 of them accepted me. But I was very surprised because my GRE was very bad, and I thought there was no school would admit me. Sometimes, things are beyond your expectation, just do what you think you should do......
I was accepted into the U. Michigan, I like this campus so much, but in terms of quality of education, I still believe that my former professors at San Francisco State University are much better than that at U. Michigan. At SFSU I can contact my professors very easily and they gave me a lot of valuable advices, but at U. Michigan it is not easy to sit down and talk with those professors. I understand they are all very busy, but I am paying $27,000 a year, do I derserve better education? Or, just for this money for the name of school????
This is very important issue you need to think about before moving to graduate school.

Good Luck!

With all due respect, you can't really know a school unless you go there -- and the second best thing is to talk to someone who DOES go there, not someone who CONSIDERED going there.

I have experience with the school at University of Michigan and it's top-notch. Professors and students hang out together and there is a sense of community there like no other school I visited. Georgetown is also amazing, but in a very expensive area. You should go visit to see what you think for yourself.

As for numbers, I currently attend one of the top MPP programs and there are many people there who don't have ridiculous GPA's or GRE's - but have good work experience or Peace Corps, etc. I think your stats are fine - it demonstrates that if anything, you are an overachiever. Furthermore, it sounds like you have a solid interest in the field and aren't just applying for something to do.

Good luck!
