MSF at UIUC vs MSF at SMU

Hello Everyone,

I have received offers from UIUC and SMU for their MSF programs. I am leaning towards choosing UIUC but I am have heard their job placements are bad and I am worried about it. What are your thoughts about these programs and the job prospects associated with them?

I am an international student who’s looking to break into the equity research domain. I have some summer internship experiences working in these spaces during my undergrad times. Post-graduation, I worked as a market research analyst at a telecommunications firm for a year. Now I am looking to get back into the finance field and an MSF degree will help me get back in the game.

I am also waiting for responses from OSU, Brandeis and UT Austin.

Why did you target these 5 MSF programs ? I ask because some are clearly for beginners while others require more advanced knowledge & abilities and a longer time committment.

What is your educational background ? (undergraduate school & major area of study)

Do you need a STEM certified program ? Or do you plan to return to your home country upon graduation ?

My main objective in applying to these programs is another chance at on-campus recruitment for investment management roles in the US. I am also looking to build on my technical skills to make myself more employable for analyst roles available today.

So I pursued my undergraduate degree at Rutgers University with a major in Economics and a concentration in Financial Economics. My interest in Finance peaked a little late during my Undergrad time which resulted in me entering the recruiting process later than someone who knew what they wanted.

Yes, I’m looking at STEM only programs as I look to work in the US for a few years to gain valuable experience which I could possibly utilize in the future at my home country.

Then you need to choose a masters program which includes a practicum or internship component in order to connect with an employer.

SMU does and all should, but you need to check each school’s website.

Location may also be a factor that could help your job search for a practicum or internship.
