Hey y’all! So, I am planning to apply to this program. Anyone else planning to apply? And also, if you have been part of this program in the past, do you have any tips, thoughts, or anything else I should be aware of?
Oh and also, is anyone willing to take a look at my application essay?
Also does anyone know if being from Alabama will hurt my chances?
My daughter is applying to the program as well and based on the materials we have read on this program, it doesn’t appear that they take state of residence into consideration. What they seem to value is commitment to research, recommendations and what you’ve done as they require a resume. Just make sure you have a place to stay if you get accepted because they do not providing housing during the 8 week program. Good luck!
How selective is this program, and is it worth applying if I don’t have time to write good essays?
@ThinkOn oh ok! Thank you so much! Good luck to your daughter as well!!
@cliffnotes Oh yes! This program is pretty competitive. Last year the acceptance rate was 3%. But, it’s still worth a shot!
@cliffnotes oh also I think that they are planning expanding the program. So the acceptance rate may change a little this year.
for the resume, I (current high school senior) haven’t really don’t anything outside of school and clubs and one internship… most people in my grade already have part time jobs but i don’t have one and I feel like it will reflect really badly on my part. Thoughts?
Hey! Honestly, I feel that that internship might be really significant. Where was it? And what subject/research area was the internship part of? I’m no expert, but if you demonstrate a passion for science through our essays and resume, I think you have a good chance! But don’t just take my word of course.

The main thing on my resume is a cancer research internship that I participated in over the past two years at Alabama State University. This summer, as a part of this internship, I drafted a review article that is in the process of being published. Do y’all think that this experience would be helpful/significant regarding admissions to HOPP?
@ritikulous Yes, I think your demonstrated interest in research is very important in this particular application. I would emphasize it throughout your essays.
Hey guys. I’m applying this year (already submitted my application) and was wondering, how long should the resume be? I did some research, most sites told me it should be around 1-2 pages. A previous participant of the program that I know said that the resume should only be one page. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
@HyperPi My daughter submitted a 1 page resume covering her research experience, science classes taken outside of school and a quick list of her EC’s. Personally, I don’t think it matters the length of the resume as long as its concise and provides relevant info. My daughter submitted her application as well, but one of her recommendation providers had difficulty accessing the link they provided to submit her recommendation. We sent an email to the Summer program asking for a new email or another line and we heard boo. After no reply the second time, her recommendation provider faxed in the recommendation. Don’t have a lot of confidence that things are being attended to over there regarding the application process…but perhaps once the deadline nears the program folks will start answering emails and ensuring that faxed in recommendations are connected to the right candidates? I hope this isn’t a sign of how the program will be run in the summer…
@ritikulous Hey! Sorry for such a late response. The internship is irrelevant to research, it was at a motor repair shop. Honestly, during that time I was exploring how i liked engineering vs medicine
I got into the top 10% of applicants last year as a freshman. Do they actually reconsider applicants from previous years because it asks that on the application? Would I have a lower chance because they want to give a chance to new applicants? Thanks in advance.
LOLOLOL!! @darkangel3541
Omg I don’t think they’d do that. You’ll be fine. It doesn’t make much sense for them to not consider previous applicants lol! If anything, it it shows that you’re truly interested in their program. @Quantuf
