Msm

How is MSM with financial aid/scholarships?

Look for Spelmom. Her son attends MSM, if I remember correctly.

Not among the most generous, that's for sure. They emphasize that they are not nearly as well endowed as their friend downtown (Juilliard), and therefore they must distribute primarily according to financial need. From what I have been able to observe both in my own case ( my son got no merit scholarship although he received substantial merit scholarship from everywhere else he applied), and from people I know, their money goes based on need first, their instrumental needs, and then merit.

I'm guessing that those who need financial aid won't be able to get merit scholarships?

Actually, it's more along the lines that if you have need, they try to give you
as much merit scholarship as possible as part of your package. They are good in that respect. It is more difficult to get merit scholarship without a demonstration of need; they have to really need your instrument or you have to be pretty spectacular.

Our son was offered about a 25% tuition scholarship. After talking with students he knows at MSM, that apparently is a generous offer. Our family must have demonstrated need.....the COA at MSM is a bunch of money to us. Even with that merit award, it was beyond our family's ability to pay.
I think MSM might have been surprised that we couldn't meet the difference......as they did view that as a good offer, I think.
