If I might be interested in pursuing an MSTP or MD/PhD program related to cancer biology, would I need to major in biology or a hard science as an undergrad?

Bio or Chem would probably help facilitate the very specific basic research which will help you.

There's a dude in this year's entering MD/PhD class who graduated with a BA in English. He did two years of research in the life sciences (I forget what subject area) afterwards, though.

Ok. How about for the MD only; I know med schools claim to disregard undergrad major as a factor, but would a social science major in any way be a disadvantage in terms of MD admissions?

That was quick. ;)

Major in something tht you like also.
