MT auditions for fall 2007

okay, so as most future MT majors, I've been flipping out about college for as long as I can remember, but just recently have been kicking things into gear by gathering as much as I can and actually starting my apps (Im going NYU ED) and right now im in the midst of looking into audition songs. Im a soprano ( i stop sounding "pretty" at about a High D) and can belt to a C comfortably but can hit up to a D well. So i've been reading everything and anything about what to do and what not to do... and so far from thsi website and several others I have gathered... Don't do anything on broadway, don't do sondheim, wildhorn, webber, jrb (because they are overdone and most are hard to play for accompanists / not age appropraite) , don't do anything overused (which Im kind of at a loss for what is overused), and none of the shows on ccm's dont list. I own all the musical theatre anthologies for soprano and belter/mezzo, so i've been looking through those but that scares me because I would think the stuff in there would be over done, even if it is kind of obscure. Is that true? Anyway, for my soprano ballad I wanted to do If I loved you, from Carousel , and for the up-tempo belty piece Always True to You from Kiss me Kate. Are these songs terribly overdone? and if they are, would anyone have suggestions based on my range ? Thanks for the help!
Much Love

I think that what you've said about what to avoid isn't completely accurate. I mean, you could go by that and not go wrong, but Sondheim and JRB aren't necessarily bad composers to do music from. It all depends on what you bring to the audition, I think. If you bring something unique, it won't matter. And just take your music to a piano player and see if on sight they think it would be a big problem for them to play. Most accompanists will know a lot of repertoire, but still .. I'm just trying to give you a shortened version of what a teacher at the CMU summer program I went to told us.

I think that Always True to You might be a little bit too overdone. But again, if you feel like it really suits you .. go for it.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but "If I Loved You" is usually considered pretty overdone, too.

if you look into the later volumes (usually 3 & 4) of the MT Anthology books, there will be songs that aren't as used. a lof of times girls will get the first one, MAYBE 2, and sing stuff with their voice teachers from those. since i assume you have a good legit sound (if you were considering "if i loved you"), stick with older shows for one of your song choices. that will keep with the legit sound -- just try to find something a little less overdone.

best of luck!

thanks so much for the info! yea, i kind of assumed that they were both going to be overdone, and the tip about looking through my 3 & 4 books is really useful : ). I guess it's back to the books for mee
