MaryAnna....That is an amazing accomplishment about your male student who got into CMU and the full ride to boot! Obviously he is an exceptional talent! Yes, the odds for boys are better but still very difficult. His entire outcome seems to affirm that he had what it took! I wish him well as it seems like an awesome program with very happy students.

Sometimes a student is just what one school wants and not another program. For instance, you say he got into CMU with scholarship and waitlisted at CAP and just the opposite happened to my D. A girl who is a good friend of my D's from our high school got denied at CAP but into Emerson and opposite happened to my D. I could go on but you get the picture. You have to have what it takes to be considered but then there seems to be a bit of extra luck if you fit into a slot that they are looking for. How else do some kids get into UM and not Emerson and many more stories like that which I could tell? For your student, he surely got into one of the most selective schools and so who knows why he did not at some other school and nor does it matter because he done good! I hope he has a fantastic time and I hope at some point, these kids on this forum or sons/daughters/students of posters on this forum meet up in their theatrical careers. I have an inkling there is some fabulous talent represented here and I am very impressed by many of the talents I am reading about!

OCU is a terrific program > I especially like all the performance related degrees. I know of no other school with such a variety. There seems to be something for everyone.

I have a female student who will be attending this year. She did not get into the MT program but was accepted into the Theatre Performance degree program. (not to be confused with their acting degree)
This will be great for her because she will receive dance, vocal and acting training and be able to audition again for MT in the spring. It's kind of a cross between acting and MT
I think it is a place they put students who they are interested in, who show potential as actors/singers, but may not be competitive yet in their MT program.

How wonderful that the program has a place to nurture these young artists

Thank you, everyone, for all the great advice. There are so many wonderful people in this area. You would think it would be terribly cutthroat, but I have found the opposite. My D's just not a super experienced dancer. I seem to be hearing a lot about Oklahoma. Does anyone know anything about their program? Is their location a plus or minus?

elaine, from what i know of ocu (oklahoma city university, not to be confused with osu-oklahoma state university) they're very well known for having strong vocal and dance elements, and the school has a very warm atmosphere. that's where i'm looking most heavily right now. a friend of a friend is an MT major there, and as far as location, he told me that oklahoma city, in his opinion, surprisingly has a lot to do (considering we're from the boston area.) i guess i wouldn't say the location is a plus or minus.. ok city isn't exactly a vacation spot, but it's not a school plopped in the middle of a cornfield either.
there's an mt student from ocu here on the board (ocuMTinfo), i know he'd answer any questions you might want to ask him.

Oklahoma - To clarify MTpolk - I think you were trying to contrast OCU to OU (University of Oklahoma - Norman). Based on the big list, OSU (Oklahoma State) does not offer MT. The three in Oklahoma that do offer MT are Tulsa, OCU, and OU, based on the big list. OU is in Norman, only about 20 minutes south of OKC. OKC is a huge city, and we've been impressed with what we've seen.

MTpolk - are you a rising senior? Are you a boy or girl?

The University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK (20 minutes north of OKC) also offers a BM in MT. My D, a junior MT major at OCU, has seen several of their productions and worked with some of their students in summer stock and says they have a decent program as well. UCO is a public institution with about 15,000 students and is cheaper than OCU.

hi ericsmom, thanks for the clarification. sorry i didn't reply sooner, i was on vaca in colorado (it's beautful out there!) :-)
i'm actually a rising sophomore in college, looking to transfer from a 2 year MT program (dean college in MA) and ocu is at the top of my list right now. it's a pretty sticky situation i got myself into, but i follow these threads closely so i'm as prepared as i can be for auditions coming up this fall!
