I go to an arts magnet school and I'm a musical theatre major. Our department head chooses most of our electives for us but last year was my first year at the school so he didn't pick mine that year. I had no acting classes but I did have a MT class. Next year my only acting class is Directing, but I have MT (required), music theory, and I'm a member of my school's MT repertory ensemble. I'm going to try to get him to let me out of taking music theory to take Voice & Diction or Movement but I don't want to leave the ensemble. Will my MT heavy course load lead colleges to pigeonhole me as a MT kid who can't act? I'm a senior and it's too late for me to change majors.

My son went to a relatively small public high school. His first and only theatre class was his last semester of senior year. The audition will be more important. Son will be an incoming BFA Acting freshman this year. BAL!!! :)

I can only speak from my small circle of experience… My D went to a well known PA magnet school. The vast majority of kids in their drama program were/are MT kids, even though they no longer have a MT program. A good number of them, over the last 10+ years, have ended up in straight drama programs (many of whom auditioned for MT programs, but were offered spots in the drama program instead). Also, keep in mind that the vast majority of non-PA private/public high schools don’t offer much in the way of drama classes, and almost always only produce a spring musical.

As entertainersmom says: It is all about your audition! If college acting programs were only looking for kids who’d “majored” in acting during high school, the whole process would be a lot less competitive, right? Most applicants have gone to regular high schools!

My high school didn’t even have theatre classes…
If you can act, you can act. They won’t look at your high school classes. You’ll be fine!
