Should I Apply for MT Major?

I wanted to know if I should apply for a MT major, or just stay with art. I don’t know how to dance or really act, and I can sing kind of well, but I don’t think any college will accept that. My high school also doesn’t have a drama club because we don’t have an auditorium. Should I just stick with art as a future major?

I think your answering your own question. Students that I am familiar with if they didn’t go to a pre professional high school at least took dance, acting, voice lessons for years. You don’t seem to have those interests so why apply to MT then?

On the other side talk to an advisor at a target college or look up what’s needed. Maybe your a natural? These programs aren’t for students that would think it would be fun to do. Many are serious programs

But many colleges have open auditions and even student run programs to try out for.

Hope this makes sense.

Schools with a MT major / concentration will generally fall into two categories: BFA (audition in), and BA (open or no audition required).

The BFAs are very competitive and literally have hundreds (or over a thousand) kids auditioning for 15-50 spots. These are the schools for the seasoned performers or newly found natural superstars.

The BA programs may be great for you. You can explore your interest in theater and perhaps other majors / minors (Hard to do with BFA programs as they are intensive training programs). Also, many of these schools will have open auditions for shows so literally any student can participate (if they are cast).

Depending on how serious you are about MT, there are BA programs that are very solid like Muhlenberg College in PA. Many state flagships have decent theater programs too.

Happy exploring. Theater is great for so many things (beyond performing).
