Hi! I was very curious about CMU’s summer pre-college, and whether or not the lofty price was worth the experience.

Has anyone here attended the MT Or Acting pre-college? How was it? Does it give you an edge over other potential students if you decide to audition at CMU for their BFA program?

And, most importantly, is the >$7k price tag worth a summer in Pittsburgh? While I would love such an opportunity, the cost would be coming out of my parents’ pockets, and not mine, and asking for such an extravagant gift is just a bit too much. However, I’m sure someone can convince me (though not so much my parents) it’s worth the price!

Carnegie Mellon is my dream school (one of them, anyway) and I cannot articulate how much I would love to be apart of the pre-college program.

So, what are the thoughts of you semi-anonymous users on pre-college? Should it be considered?

No, it does not give you an edge over potential students. Don’t go to it thinking that it will help you get into CMU.

Whether it’s worth the price tag is for you to determine. My D loved it, and it was invaluable in preparing for college auditions, for learning in the classes themselves, for evaluating where one might stand in the broader pool of applicants (big fishes in small ponds might end up widening their college search when they see how amazingly talented their peers are…), and gaining some independence and feel for living on a college campus.

Pittsburgh is a terrific city, and when students are not in class or back at the dorm in time for curfew, they can go on their own around town.

I agree with SDonCC about the pre-college program not giving you an edge at CMU. However, the training you get and the experience with auditions (one of the courses they take is called “audition”) can definitely make you better prepared to audition anywhere. You will walk out of there with monologue suggestions, song suggestions and the experience of working in a conservatory style program with top notch professors. My daughter adored her teachers, and she is still in contact with a few of them. They also recognized her at her CMU audition in February and she was so comfortable there that nerves were not an issue. The summer program is longer than many of the other programs available and very thorough. The last week, you actually audition for the program in front of the faculty. It is very rare that they accept someone from the pre-college program at these auditions, but the experience helps with the rest of your process. It is expensive, but for my daughter it was worth it. The experience of being on her own at “college” for the summer was invaluable as well. The kids live like Freshman co-eds. Nice to experience that and figure things out before it really “counts”. That being said there are a lot of really nice programs out there without the big price tag. Taking some sort of summer preparation is a really good idea if you can work it out. Good luck!

I went to Pre-College last summer (2012) so if there are any personal questions you need answering I’d be happy to help. I know that there were certain questions I needed answered before I went!

I am applying to CMU’s MT Pre College Summer Program and was just wondering what past participants scores and grades were like. I understand that space is limited and I am curious about my chances. Thanks to anyone and everyone for their advice and or information.
