I act, sing and dance but dance is my strength. My main goal would be to be an ensemble dancer on broadway. I posted a similar question and have gotten many great replies but none of the suggested schools were in California, which is where I would love to be. Of course I consider the other states, but I would love to hear the best suggestions for California. Thank you!!
Chapman University has a good dance program, CalArts, Pace University, and the Kaufman School of Dance at USC.
Are you from California? It makes a difference in costs. The schools are very expensive
I’m a Californian and IMO you’d have better luck studying dance in-state than MT - there are relatively few CA options for MT. @MWolf listed the schools that first came to mind but PACE is in NYC, not California.
USC’s MT program is brand-spanking new so hard to know anything but it’s connected with their dance school, which has a really good reputation. CalArts has programs in Acting, Music and Dance but doesn’t have a specific MT program. Chapman would be a good fit and maybe also UCI. AMDA is an option if you want training but not the academics. Cal State Fullerton is a program with a great and terrible reputation - great in that it provides top-notch training, terrible that there’s no bar to get in, just to stay in - something like 85% of their incoming freshman will be cut from MT by the time the class gets to junior year.
@CaMom13 You are right, of course. I was looking at the list my D got from her dance school, and I guess my eyes jumped a line or something.
LOL @MWolf - it’s a wonder we can still read anything with this new format straining our eyes.
Not a lot of choices for Californians in-state. CSUF (cut program), USC ($$$ and new), UC Irvine (audition later), UCLA (heavy on academics) and SDSU (BA and not heavy in dance or voice) are the only schools that offer some type of MT, but search here in this forum to see the inherent problems with each of those programs. Also, not sure any of those MT curriculums are strong in dance, although I do know dancers have gone to the theatre programs for CSUF and UCLA. I would suggest you study the websites program overview and the 4-year curriculum to see how they are very different from a traditional MT conservatory style program and/or what you are looking for. As mentioned above, you may be better off just majoring in dance and then study voice on the side if ensemble is your goal. I would recommend a school that is balanced in ballet, jazz and tap. I know USC, UCLA and UC Irvine all have strong dance programs, but they appear more contemporary from the students I know who attended there
Most California MT people give up on an in-state option and actually are not typically your most cost-effective choice. Western options of true MT conservatory programs that are reasonable include Univ of Utah (strong dance curriculum), Univ of Northern Colorado, and Univ of Arizona. Also, if ensemble is your goal, then it is hard not to encourage you to look at OCU.
Chapman University is starting a BFA MT program this year.
@MTDad2025 Thank you for that information regarding Chapman. I see Theatre and Theatre performance majors and a minor in Musical Theatre there. Do you know if only the minor will be offered in Musical Theatre and not a major?
@Twelfthman Only MT minor added to existing, well-respected BFA in Acting. No major in MT at this time. Sorry for the confusion.
UCI Irvine does have a dance major if you have the grades for the school.
