Has anyone take Hum3321 online? if so, what was it like? was it easy? I don't know whether I should take it as an actual class or online. any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

My daughter is taking it now and she has a 99% without breaking a sweat. There is one paper due each Friday on the film you watched that week and the issue it deals with (I think maybe 500 words each) and then a thesis statement and a capstone paper at the end of the course. Her best friend took it last semester in the classroom and had a much harder time, more writing was required and they had quizzes in the class as well as a participation grade component.

Thank you! I’m just scared that with my bad procrastination habits, an online class isn’t a good idea. I’ll give it some consideration.

My daughter can also be a procrastinor but the nice thing is most of the movies were newer (The Help, Thelma & Louise, I can’t remember what else) so they were interesting and she could watch them online at any point in the week. She still waits until Friday evening to write the paper and uploads it minutes before it has to be turned in (midnight) which I will never understand when she has all week. LOL. But, you really can’t procrastinate too much because the papers are on a weekly deadline and if you don’t submit them by then you don’t get full credit. Also, the movies aren’t the same every semester. Last semester in the classroom I think they showed Harry Potter.

I took it online last summer during the summer C semester (so in 6 weeks). I think I ended up with a 97 or 98, and that was because I accidentally only posted like half of one of the assignments and didn’t realize it. The class is really easy if you just follow directions.

The hardest part for me was the final paper, as I had trouble writing the minimum number of words. We were given a list of movies and told to pick from that list or ask about other movies, and I chose to write about Wall-E.

I also only watched I believe 3 or 4 of the films (I think we watched 10 or 11 total), and unfortunately for me I thought most of the ones we watched were terrible. Luckily for me though most of the movies were ones I had already seen (two of the movies we watched were The Usual Suspects and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry). They’ve changed the movie list since then though I believe, so you might not be lucky like I was.

I’d recommend the class though. If you are afraid of procrastinating, the best advice I can give is to take the class during Summer C, when you really can’t procrastinate at all.

I’ll be honest- I’m probably the king of procrastination. I’ve taken multiple online courses at FSU though and I think most of them are just as good, if not better than, their classroom counterparts. The professors understand that you’re taking the class online most likely because your schedule is packed, and they try to work with that. The Multicultural Film class was probably my favorite online class I’ve taken.

I’m taking it in an actual class now, and it’s super easy. My professor is really chill, and an easy grader. We have to write three 500-word papers, and one 1500 word paper over the course of the semester. Every week we have an open book online quiz. We’re having a final, but he said he might just put it online and let us use our books, so it’ll basically be like an extended quiz. My quiz average is like a 95%, and I have averaged a 96% on the three 500 word papers. We also get 5 extra credit, super easy bonus assignments, and each one adds a WHOLE percent to our grade. So, in reality, a student who does everything perfectly could get a 105%

Random, but if you need the books, I could sell them to you. The anthology changes every semester, but the summer class uses the same movies as the spring courses do, so you’d be able to use my anthology. I believe it was like $78 at the bookstore new, so if you want it cheaper, let me know!

P.S. I wrote my papers like a night or two before…I’m not the best paper-writer, either. Totally content with his grading style!

Thanks guys! There are just so many sections so I’m afraid that some TA’s, or teachers, won’t be as laid back as others. Are there any tests/quizzes for the online class?

My daughter doesn’t have any tests or quizzes in her online class. The instructor is Alix Miller.

I noticed that the online classes mention that they have a screening every Monday. Is attendance mandatory at this screening? I mean–is it completely online with no brick & mortar attendance required?

She had to do first day attendance but after that she was able to view the movies online. The screening was optional.

We didn’t have any quizzes or tests, just the short essays and then the paper.

The movie screenings aren’t required. When I took it over the summer the movies were available for streaming on Blackboard for a couple days each while they were the focus of the class.
