I know I’m going to major in music teaching. Thats for sure, but I also want to do other things in the business and art field. I’m going to be in my senior year of high school and I’ve taken numerous business classes like accounting, marketing, business management, etc. I’m really interested in business. However I am an artist (I don’t mean to sound prideful or anything) I have won a lot of fine art awards, and I love to draw and paint. I feel like I will be leaving my art “skills” to waste if I major in something that does not need any art skills. I also love the environment, and I want to be able to help/save it. But I’m not all that great at math and science subjects.
How can I combine all my interests/passion into one or two careers? Your thoughts?
Being a music teacher (or, for that matter, an art teacher) is a wonderful profession-- if you can get hired.
Here’s the problem: take a look at your high school yearbook. Go to the faculty section and count the math teachers, the English teachers, the history teachers. Then count the music teachers. Ouch.
My high school has a math department of 22 teachers. But we have 3 music teachers. And we’re somewhat of an anomaly because we’re such a big school. The vast majority of schools have a single music teacher. That means, for the most part, that no one gets hired until that single teacher retires.
No, I’m really, really NOT trying to talk you out of your ambition. (I HATE when people do that to kids!!!) But as long as you’re talking about options, I would urge you to give yourself more of them.
You say you’re really interested in business. Could you take a look at marketing? (I know next to nothing about it. But it seems that being successful in marketing items would require a creativity that I’m lacking.) Would you look at computer animation? Even google “careers for art/music majors” to find some options to consider.
I’m not suggesting that you abandon your plans, just maybe including a minor in marketing or something. That way, should it take you more than one hiring season to find that Music job, you still have something in your resume that would open up some options for you.
