I am interested in the School of Music five year double-degree program (Vocal Performance and Economics) at Northwestern. The Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences program looks really interesting to me as well; could I take that in addition to the double major program?

By the way, how heavily does Northwestern look at the Writing Score on the SAT? I got a 760 Math, 740 Crit. Reading and 600 writing, and I am planning to retake the test.

Wouldn't that be a triple major, to do Music, Econ and MMSS? Would that be allowed or even feasible? As a former Econ & MMSS major, I can attest that there's generally fairly little time to take other courses, once you've done your distros.

Well, Northwestern has a special WCAS/School of Music Double Degree 5-year program, and I was hoping that the "joint major" as they describe the MMSS/Econ might be technically counted as one major on it's own (just like various math-econ majors at other schools).

Plus on the Program Overview on the MMSS website, they state that:

"The option of obtaining a minor or an additional (third) major in mathematics is also offered for students who wish to pursue mathematics more deeply."

Here they refer to a "triple major" being acceptable, although they are speaking about math here so I'm still not entirely sure...

yes, MMSS automatically fulfills the prereqs for the kellogg certificate in financial econ. i think that MMSS is the best way to go if you want to be really competitive for that certificate.

your questions in this case are pretty complicated. when discussing a 4 or 5-year plan as complicated as this your best bet is to call or email your advisor at Northwestern (or just talk to them when you get on campus during new student week) because even if you do receive an answer on these boards, with something as technical as triple majoring across schools you're going to want a definitive, official (and authentically accurate) answer.

Well, I don't think b_hand has gotten in yet.

E-mail the undergraduate admissions office and while they won't know the answer off the top of their head, they'll definitely find out for you. We have senior counselors who answer these types of questions every day.

Before I email the admissions office, I'd like to find out if anyone knows any MMSS, Econ and Physics majors at NU [who are still graduating in 4 years].

From the MMSS website:
"In addition to the traditional social science disciplines - anthropology, economics, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, and sociology, other fields such as Slavic studies, cognitive sciences, computer sciences, mathematics, and statistics have been chosen as joint majors by students in the MMSS program."

Since cog/comp sci etc. wouldn't count as social sciences, does this mean they would have to be taken as triples? If so, shouldn't a physics triple be somewhat feasible?

Before everyone starts calling me crazy, I'd like to say that the only reason I'm thinking of this is because I really like physics and it comes quite naturally to me. Moreover, the concentration I had in mind was computational physics, which sounds a little like MMSS for hard sciences. Sounds fascinating.

I won't ask about the adding the certificates on top of that... ><

Last year, couple RD admits got their wish without applying for it initially. But that's when they haven't committed to NU yet; so it's possible they used their other choices as leverage and NU was giving them a deal.

^^Many claim that NU doesn't superscore. You can always email them to double check though.

Do they look at anything other than GPA and SAT scores for MMSS? I wonder what was wrong with the application of that guy with the 3.8 GPA. Hmm...

they got only 20 spots available and in a typical year, there are 200-250 econ majors. other majors can apply for mmss too. i wouldn't be surprised if the cut-off GPA was 3.8+. they just expanded and i believe 30 spots are now available for sophomore entry. but more people are interested in mmss too because it automatically fulfills the prereqs for kellogg cert.
