Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences (MMSS)

Hey, I’m a HS senior interested in MMSS

How difficult (percentage-wise) is it to get into this program?

How is the program? Challenging? Fun? Good for job placement? Good internship opportunities? Connections? etc.

I want to do a double in econ and math. I’m guessing that’s like the point of this program. Correct me if I’m wrong?

Is the core flexible? Would I be able to take a lot of electives on top of the requirements?

Thanks.

Hey one of my friends is in MMSS. It is a VERY prestigious program and many graduates end up at Goldman Sachs, Wall Street and score great internships. It's hard to get in I don't know the % but its very competitive, but easiest to get into if you apply for freshman year. My friend in MMSS doesn't like the program because its extremely difficult since you start off with so many advanced classes and you have to compete against such smart people (mostly asian) to beat the curve. I think you take 2 requirements per quarter but I'm not entirely sure...and most people double major with Econ or Math

everything juicy said and more - it's tough. the classes can be difficult (much more difficult than any of your friends are probably taking, at least). but the classes are rewarding - i've only taken the classes for a quarter and i already think it's a rewarding experience.

Yea i am curious too, how is the mmss program. I heard once you finish the program that major companies like JP Morgan, Allstate Insurance, Fidelity Investments and Federal Reserve Board start recruiting mmss students. How many get in each year? How many students are in each class compared to the others? If you choose to do this program, what other requirements do you have to satisfy?

actually does this program even have a separate application? Because I never heard of a nomination form at my school or anything (as opposed to honors programs for UVA and Emory). So do you just check the box to be considered?

@schin721 - 20 freshmen and 20 sophomores get accepted every year. It is VERY hard to get into. As for class sizes it depends on the class. For example, MMSS math, only freshmen takes it, so there are 20 people. MMSS 211-1 freshman and new sophomores took it so around 30.

@fortune3 - the application for this program is here

http://www.mmss.northwestern.edu/admission/MMSS_freshman_application.pdf

hmm...

I know that a very select few get in BUT how competitive is it to get in?

What do they take into consideration the most? Grades? SAT's? Essays?

Thanks StrikeX2 that's what I was looking for, are you in the program or know anyone in it?

I have a friend who is in the program and I am considering applying as a sophomore. ^_^

I'm a senior in hs and i was just accepted to mmss a few days ago.
I think its a lot easier to get in if u apply to enter as a freshman

I heard from someone on here that it isn't very hard to get into the program.

hmm... (just wanted to say that)

The program used to be very self-selected so most people that applied and got into Northwestern would get into the program. But this has changed as more and more people know about it. Still, it's a lot easier to get in as a freshman. A portion of the applicants would be rejected by NU regular admission. Then some of those that got in would go somewhere else like Ivies/Stanford (while those schools have the name, you won't find anything close to MMSS in those schools). NU accepts more than 20 students to account for the yield. So the chance of you getting into MMSS is pretty good if you already get accepted to NU. Sophomore admission is an entirely different animal. That's when you compete with other NU econs/engineering majors. Each year, there are 200-250 econ majors. And NU would accept just 20 people because the yield isn't a concern

Is the workload really that bad? NU is a match school for me, but I currently go to a non-competitive high school that doesn't offer Calc BC until senior year. Can I get in without having taken the BC exam? I got a 5 on the AB test, and will probably do the same on BC.
I don't want to feel like I'm in over my head... Do you suggest I apply or not? (I'm pretty sure I want to do and econ/math major no matter where I go to college)

Also, when is the deadline for the MMSS forms? Do you hear back from northwestern admissions or the MMSS program first? (Chi1234, are you already in ED?)

^wow, that recruiting list is very impressive.

I was accepted early decision before I applied to MMSS so i didn't know if I was going to get in.
For regular decision, the deadline is March 1. I don't know when you find out, but I"m sure it would be after you have been accepted.
You should definitely apply because you are interested in econ/math and you have nothing to lose by applying.
