Can anyone tell me about the classical music scene at Bryn Mawr? Is it easy to get lessons (violin?), play in an orchestra, do chamber music and possibly major in music? Not looking for a conservatory, but looking for a strong group of musicians and faculty. Also thinking about Swarthmore

Yes, it’s possible to do all of the things you mentioned. My D is a Bryn Mawr graduate (theater–an independent major) and her roommate was a music major. Like a number of majors in the bio-co, music is offered at Haverford and Bryn Mawr students go there for classes. There’s a bus that goes between Haverford/Bryn Mawr and Swartmore for most of the day and evening. Registering for music courses at Haverford is like registering at Bryn Mawr–not a problem. You can also take music courses at Swartmore. My D’s roommate also had a voice coach and the opportunity to sing with a number of choral groups in the bi-co. My sense is that there were many opportunities for her at all three campuses. She got a job right after college–not her dream job–but related to music. She did an internship with Sirrus (satellite radio station) and ended up working for them after she graduated.

As Bromfield mentioned, the music department is at Haverford. With all majors, Bryn Mawr and Haverford students have free reign of majoring at either college. Music is one of the few majors where only one college offers them (ie Art History and Growth and Structure of Cities are only offered at Bryn Mawr, while Fine Arts and Music are only at Haverford). I know several students involved in the orchestra. Philadelphia is also a great resource to see more music and even find related internships.
