My daughter just returned from Bryn Mawr’s On Campus Days event and is very positive about the school. Her probable major is Physics. She is very involved in music avocationally - she plays piano in a jazz ensemble at her high school, trumpet in our community’s youth orchestra, and plays the organ. In high school her favorite extra curricular activity has been playing keyboard (and sometimes trumpet) in the two musical theatre productions her school produces each year. She would like to continue to take piano lessons while in college as well as play in musical groups, and perhaps minor in music. I know that the music major available to Bryn Mawr students is at Haverford. My daughter says she asked about muscial groups during her visit and was told that at Bryn Mawr there are really just a few acapella groups. Are there any musical opportunities at Bryn Mawr? Is everything at Haverford? Do the Bryn Mawr students actively participate other than taking courses at Haverford? Who at Bryn Mawr could we contact for additional information?

I know that the orchestra is bi-co. It's called the Bryn Mawr-Haverford orchestra. There aren't enough students on one campus to fill all the instruments needed. (My daughter plays the viola, so this info for important for her to know.)

Almost all performances, musical and otherwise, are at Haverford. I saw the facilities there, and they are quite nice, although not top-notch. There seems to seem enormous fluidity between the two campuses; I've begun to think of them as one school with two campuses, joined by a shuttle bus.

It's a shame that you couldn't get over to Haverford during your visit this weekend. I suggest that you call the admissions office. They will either answer your questions or direct you to someone who can.

I am a student at Bryn Mawr and am very involved with music. I play the violin and piano and also sing, and have found that the music department has everything I could want. Your daughter can take lessons, play in a chamber group (the chamber music program is very good in my opinion), or play in the Bi-Co orchestra. The chamber music program takes place between the two colleges, like the orchestra, but I have been in chamber groups with all Bryn Mawr girls and in chamber groups with Bryn Mawr girls and Haverford girls/guys...etc. We would rehearse at one college and have a lesson at the other, to balance it out. It is very easy to get involved with music here, and I've had no complaints so far. If you have any other questions, please feel free to message me or email me!

can you take piano lessons if you're a complete beginner? as in, you're interested in starting piano??
