Does anyone have any information to share about the strength of the music program at Carleton? I would particularly like to read about the orchestra and ensemble groups (instrumental music). My D wants to major in math, but she also wants to play her French horn. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

^bump. but with emphasis on vocal/choral music opportunities?

And ballet, while we’re at it.

I don’t know much about dance, but music is very strong-- lots of ensembles and chamber music, lessons in a very wide variety of instr, and very few majors (mostly double majors), so almost everyone gets a chance to play.

For vocal/choral – there are, of course, the formal ensembles where you actually have a choral director. However, we also have a capella groups that put on concerts every term and sing at different events as well as student bands that sometimes have vocalists (obviously). There are plenty of opportunities for you to sing at Carleton and plenty of styles too.

For ballet – we of course offer ballet classes. I think many people who are classically trained join Semaphore, which is our most advanced dance troupe. Of course, there are other dance groups on campus, but I think Semaphore is the most advanced. https://apps.carleton.edu/admissions/activities/semaphore/

There are plenty of opportunities for participation, but I wouldn’t rank the quality as stellar. For MN schools, much better vocal & choral opportunities at St. Olaf and Concordia (Moorhead).
