My son is interested in STEM, and looking for a small to mid-sized college with great extra-curricular or non-major music opportunities. He’s currently in the high school jazz band. Can anyone comment on opportunities for non-music majors at Lafayette?
Also considering Gettysburg. Looks like they have a really strong music program. From their website, it’s not easy to get a good sense of their science programs, but I’ll keep reading. Any advice appreciated!
Has he looked at Messiah College?
My D graduated from Lafayette in 2016. She played in the orchestra all four years and it was a wonderful expereince. The orchestra seemed pretty low-key, she enjoyed playing, and the conductor was lovely. There are a number of different ensembles on campus. https://music.lafayette.edu/performance/ My D also took a couple of music courses as electives (she did not major or minor in music) with a professor she thought was brilliant/amazing.
I can’t say enough good things about her overall expereince at Lafayette. IMO the college has found that secret sauce whereby students are excited and challenged academically and still seem to find time to get involved on with things on campus.
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions about the school.
@happy1 Thanks so much for the information! Love this forum. He’s a junior now, and just starting to look. Hoping to have some good conversations this week. Will PM you if questions arise.
@mommdc Messiah looks like a great school. Christian school would not be a good fit for us, though. Thanks for the information!
Hi @parent8762
I am a current Lafayette College student, and while I am not involved in music in an official capacity at Lafayette, I still find ways to get involved through self-practice (really accessible studio space and instruments) and the variety of performances on campus. I know we have strong orchestral and band programs, but what interests me most is the ability to take music-related classes within different disciplines (engineering, history, psychology, etc) or while still maintaining a completely separate academic major. Please PM me if you have any questions!
