Music at Richmond?

Hi-I’m a senior and looking to apply most likely to LACs and major in music. I’m a classical soprano, violinist, and pianist. I also love foreign languages and want to study Italian and German in college. Does Richmond have good musical ensembles (vocal, instrumental)? Do they have good productions? How many people generally major in music? Are the productions/ensembles high enough caliber?
Also, how much flexibility is there in the curriculum to pursue multiple languages? Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Our choirs are very good! I don’t know about majors specifically, but there are around 20-30 music majors and minors total (across all four classes). Whether the caliber is high enough depends on what you want to do with music.

The music major and core courses still leave quite a bit of flexibility. There are 8 gen ed class requirements, one being an arts (you’d take this with a music major anyways) plus 4 semesters of one foreign language required (up to 12 units of gen eds). The music major involves 11.5 units. You need 35 units to graduate, so thats at least 11.5 more units of electives. Most students take 5.5 units a semester (each unit is 3.5 credits). You can definitely pursue 2 languages, but it might be difficult to take them both every semester.

Let me know if you have any other questions about the music department or UR in general!

Hello, d thinking about music (VP), theater, biology, and health care and society majors at Richmond. What is the theater major like? Are there musicals?
