Is anyone on here planning on attending Redlands in the fall to study music? Or even anyone that will be studying something else and just taking Wind Ensemble or U-Choir, as I'll be in both this fall. Post instruments/majors/voice types/ect...

Not this fall, DeadParrot, but it is on the consideration list. Will be looking for your impressions of the Choir for 2007

Can you take choir if you are not a music major? Please explain.

There are three main choirs on campus that are run by the school of music. University Choir (U Choir) is open to everyone, sign up for the course (it's 0 or 1 units), then show up. Madrigals and Chapel Singers are also open to anyone, but require an audition. Quick note, wind/percussion music majors cannot take Chapel Singers because it is scheduled at the same time as Wind Ensemble, which is a requirement for all BM and BA percussion and wind students.

Hello! I'm attending UofR next year, and I stumbled across all your amazing answers on the other thread--thanks for those! I just wanted to ask a few questions myself...

As a singer, I do wish to be in the University Choir next year (Second Soprano)... however, my real passion is musical theater. What can you tell me about the musical theater program at Redlands? Is it connected more to the Music school, or the Theater major? Do they actually have a musical theater major? I have a friend involved heavilly in the Operatic side of things this past year, but she doesn't know much about the musical theater stuff.

If you could help me, that would be wonderful! Thank you. :)

The BA Musical Theater Major has unfortunately been discontinued, the last gradutating BA MT's will be juniors next year. However, we do have a very strong musical theatre club which is all student run. They just got done with a production of Seussical the Musical. They also premiered a new student work this year, and pulled off a gigantic production of Beauty and the Beast.

So to answer your question, the musical theater 'program' is connected to neither the music school nor the theatre school, but is instead completely run by students. There aren't really any 'music theater' classes, but I know that my suitemate (a theatre major) has taken classes in his department where he was able to work on some singing monolouges.

The music department is much more supportive of opera. We did Norma this past spring, and are premiering a new opera next year sometime.

Ahhhhhh well, darn! That's too bad... I'm considering majoring in just theater, and taking the dance classes and such, but it's not really the same, is it? Hmmm... Well, thank you for answering! I'll just have to figure out a new major. I was wondering why I couldn't find anything on the UofR website about it.

Do you know if this student-run club has a website?

They don't have a website. There's always the Johnston Program if you want to mix theater and music classes, people have done that before.
