If you happen to play an instrument that is in demand in the Tufts orchestra (cello in my case), how much do you guys think it will help me get accepted?

how do you know it's in demand?

:D

I can tell you that Tufts needs cello players!!! Don't know if that will get you in tho. D was in the spring musical and the production team had to borrow a cello player from Harvard for the show!!!!

It can't hurt, but I don't imagine it culd get you in the back door.

Yeah, it could help but I imagine you won't be the only cellist applying for admission to the class of '11... you'd have to be a cellist the symphony director has heard of or wants to specifically recruit.

Do you know if they need any violists? :)

I'm planning on trying out this fall...

I'm pretty confident I have the academics to get in..
3.9 UW GPA
SAT
Reading 800
Math 680
I take courses at Colgate University during the regular school year, I live in it's college town.

As far as my music, I've been playing with Colgate's orchestra and chamber music program for two years now, and have been taking lessons there for the past 9 years.
I'll e-mail the director and ask what the situation currently is.

email the director and ask when would be a good time to visit/meet. show interest and be clear that you would love to go to Tufts and play in the orchestra. you have a good chance. While the music program at Tufts is not one of it's hallmarks, it has been in the spotlight this past year with the new building, etc.

I'm also going to look into any "connections" between the music department faculty I know at Colgate and those at Tufts. If, say, the director of Colgate's orchestra or chamber ensembles is a friend of theirs, a good recommendation would be very helpful.

I know that my cello instructor has some connections at Princeton and Columbia, since he regularly visits there to play ect... it's a small world and I wouldn't be surprised to find out he does.

Another example: this year a pro cellist guy came and had a master class with the chamber groups. Said he likes our music ect. A month later I was on Bowdoin's website and I saw he worked there.

The dreaded Malka will no longer be conducting so finally Tufts will have someone of proper calibre to lead its talented musicians. Her reviews were so low but I have no idea why it took the administration so long to can her. She looked great on paper but her incompetence was beyond embarassing.

Yeah, I'm told that she would like break down and cry and beg her students to give her high scores on the end-of-semester evaluations.

Her conducting was pathetic, indecisive, and indecipherable. Good riddance she's leaving.
