Music at UCLA: (I love Band!)

Hello all!
I plan on playing music somewhere at UCLA. I understand that UCLA has a Marching band, Wind Ensemble and Symphonic band (I checked the website) but I really didn't get a lot of feedback. So i'm wondering if anybody could shed some light on the Band expericence at UCLA. How hard is it to get into these bands and what types of performances do they hold? thanks!

i'm in the UCLA marching band

here are some past threads on it:

and here too:

if you have other questions about ucla marching band, let me know

for reference, here's the ucla marching band's website:

kfc4u,

I also have a question about the musical ensembles here on campus. I wanted to join the symphonic band and I had even signed up on the sign-up sheet (since that's all it was) at the beginning of fall '04 in the presence of the director who told me that someone would get in contact with me about an audition and I never heard anything. At the beginning of winter '05 I e-mailed the director and asked again about joining and auditions and such and I never heard a thing back. I'm soo confused about what I need to do just to be able to play in the band. I don't have to be in the marching band to participate in it, do I?

Btw, I was also thinking about considering joining the marching band this fall but my main question to you, since you're in the band currently, do you feel like you have enough time to spend doing homework and studying throughout fall quarters and still get decent enough grades? I'm worried that if I decide to join I won't have a lot of time for studying and such on game day weekends.

Thanks for your help!

PS - This fall I plan on taking Chem 30B, LS 2, Math 32A and possibly my foreign language requirement. Do you think that that's doable along with being in the band? I just don't want to end up taking on more than I can handle... (Thanks Again!)

"This fall I plan on taking Chem 30B, LS 2, Math 32A and possibly my foreign language requirement. Do you think that that's doable along with being in the band?"

that depends on you. the most represented major in the marching band is engineering. since i'm a north campus major, if i were taking those classes, i wouldn't join marching band LOL. but overall, you should have enough time. during the school year, you basically practice 2 hours for only 3 days. think of it like sacrificing time you could've spent at the gym, or time you could've spent watching tv. it's really not a lot and very do-able. the big thing is the all-day saturday at the rose bowl. i sometimes felt like i had to play catchup on sundays.

hmm i'm not sure about symphonic band or wind ensemble. you have to audition separately with them, because their directors are not the same director of the marching band. anybody can audition for symphonic band; you don't have to be in marching band. but i'm really not sure about this, sorry.

Really? Most are engineers? Interesting... Lol. Well, thanks for the reply and I'm now slightly more convinced that I'd be able to take on the band...

But that brings up a couple other questions, the audition is just four scales and a piece of music of our choice right? Is there any specific type of piece that we should play over another? (i.e. march vs. concert piece) or does it not matter as long as you can play it well?

"Most are engineers?"

the most represented major is engineering. that doesn't necessarily mean that the majority of the band are engineers.

"the audition is just four scales and a piece of music of our choice right? Is there any specific type of piece that we should play over another? (i.e. march vs. concert piece) or does it not matter as long as you can play it well?"

4 scales, piece of your choice, and i heard they added stars and stripes onto the audition this year because that's going to be a song in a special field show. as for the piece of your choice, i dont think it really matters as long as you can play well. i actually picked a (moderately difficult) pep song to play for my audition, which is relatively easy when compared to most concert pieces or marches.

Thanks kfc4u!

okay actually i heard stars and stripes was only a requirement for flutes/piccolos because it features a solo for them.

Brass, Clarinets, Alto Sax and Tenor Sax
- Short prepared piece or etude
- The following major scales: Bb, Eb, C, F

Flute and Piccolo
- Short prepared piece or etude
- The following major scales: Bb, Eb, C, F
- Piccolo solo from Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever performed on either Piccolo or Flute

Percussion
- Go to the percussion audition section

Flag
- Perform a two minute routine to music of your choice.

Golden Girl (Feature Twirler)
- Perform a two minute routine to music of your choice.
