I'm gonna be applying for college this fall. Cornell is one of my dream schools and if I get in, I'll definitely attend. I've been playing viola and flute throughout high school. I'm not going to be a music major but still want to continue playing in college.

If we bring our instruments, are we allowed to keep it and practice in the dorms or are there separate practice rooms?

Although i've played in school orchestras and bands, I've only received music lessons for about two years so my skills/techniques aren't great. Are there music lessons available on campus, even for beginners like me?

I also play the piano...I don't play at school and don't take any more lessons, but like most asians, I started when I was very little so I'm pretty good on my own. Since we can't bring a piano...is there like a practice room or anywhere we're just free to practice on our own?

There are practice rooms in Lincoln Hall…they’re pretty nice. I forget if I had to sign up for it…it was a few years ago ;)

I also play the flute and piccolo. I played my instruments in my dorm room at the beginning of the semester, but as the semester progressed on I used the practice rooms so as not to disturb my room and hall mates.

i was looking online, i too want lessons, and the music dept states that it will not offer intro or “basic” lessons, but they will recommend a few people who do-- i guess it is beneath them.

I have actually had some difficulty finding lessons, but perhaps I haven’t been looking hard enough.

You are allowed to play instruments in your room, and most of the time your floormates probably won’t mind either. Even if you decide not to participate in a university ensemble, there are seriously plenty of students who play for fun.

Orchestra is competitive…they usually only have 2-4 seats for flutes. I auditioned every year…never made it. I ended up playing with the Ithaca College band for a few semesters.

You should check out the Registry of Small Ensembles (ROSE)…lots of people looking for some music buddies.

I’m in the same spot OP, except I play the Bass Guitar/want to learn upright Bass. I was hoping that I could continue my musical studies somewhat cheaply while up there. I hope these bad tidings aren’t the case…

I’m in the Wind Ensemble and we meet twice a week and are pretty serious about it (attendance mandatory) but it is one of the best groups I have ever been in. There are auditions in right before classes start, just look out for info on the groups’ websites (cuwinds.com is the band site).

You can play in your room, but the practice rooms in lincoln are really nice. You can pay a fee ($35 a semester) for 24 hour access, more for rooms with pianos.

In terms of lessons, Cornell has a list of teachers either at Cornell or in the area. I’ve enrolled in lessons as a 0 credit S/U class, but only because there is a small scholarship available if you are in a large ensemble (which might be gone next year…). You can get lessons at any level, but it is probably best if you have some experience on your instrument. Visit the music office for the list.

yea thanks for the answers guys! oh and i meant to say that i do have some experience like highest level school ensemble. i just didnt focus on music as the most important activty or subject i just play as a hobby :)
