can anyone share advice on music department auditions?...whether they're tough to get on campus..........how much weight they carry....whether everyone who auditions gets an evaluation...the acceptance rate of those who audition?

...any information on this could really help, a friend of mine auditioned and is applying ed, so i wanna know if it helps his chances....

Well, I've heard they have a good orchestra and string instrument programs... which was my only interest since i'm a string player.. so i don't know about the other areas of music dept.

I did a vocal audition and applied early. It was very easy to set up, and I'm pretty sure the professor who heard me sent in an evaluation. Whether it helped me remains to be seen. But I don't think they can hurt you at all; if they don't like you, they just won't send in an evaluation.

Personal audition is always better than a tape. Princeton's app last year suggested contacting the music department for an audition. A good personal audition could increase chances of garnering a recommendation or making a recommendation stronger. A bad one shouldn't hurt your chances. My understanding is that a recommendation from the music department will significantly improve a students chances of being accepted, but that most of the students who the department recommends will nevertheless not be admitted. Instrument probably matters too. In other words, the music recommendation is the factor that puts some students over the top, but for most applicants it is not enough to get them admitted. Princeton is focusing a lot on the arts, so if anything, a music department recommendation might mean more now than in the past.

I had an audition for piano. I really have no idea how much weight the audition carries, but I imagine it will help more in the ED round than RD. Simply put, fewer kids have the time to get an audition in before November. Plus, with a smaller pool of applicants, I think the few music recs floating around should have a big impact.

This is just theory though; I really don't know what kind of impact it will have with admissions. All I know is this: it can only help, not hurt.

to those of you who did audition, did the director send out good vibes or even tell you he/she was recommending you to the admissions committee?...
