One of my friends is looking to apply to Smith, but only if they have a Music Education program. I know that there is a Music program, but is it possible to take Music Education courses (those which involve conducting, student teaching, etc.)?

Smith does not offer anything as specific as a Music Education "program". the Music department is excellent and they do offer a conducting class, as well as classes in music history and composition. The education department is equally good and has some interesting courses involving audio learning, but mostly with regards to deaf children. Your friend might consider either combining music study with education courses to create a "music education focus" to her schoolwork (she could also look into five college classes like this), or else she might want to consider a music college like Berklee.
