Music Education programs

Hello, i'm a junior in highschool, play alto sax.

I am looking for colleges with:

Good music education programs, preferably jazz emphasis

Not a conservatory - i want to take classes in some other fields besides music

Is not in the middle of no where - either in a city or very close to a city

Is not impossible to get into - I'm a decent player but I won't get into the top schools

Is not extremely expensive - maybe even a state school ( I live in NY)

Thank you!

There are about 3 pages each if you do separate title searches on “music ed” and “music education”. This http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/892168-search-tips-other-insights.html</a> may help you find past info. Read through a number of the threads, there is plenty of sound advice already written.

These are just a few, with some NY/Northeast options.

Regarding costs, your cheapest will most likely be your state options, Potsdam/Crane, Fredonia, Buffalo State, Hunter and Queens, even Brooklyn Conservatory. If you are planning to stay and teach within NY, your best bet is a program within your own state. Privates would include Ithaca, Syracuse, Hartwick, and Houghton if you are looking for a faith based option. Without knowing your grades and stats, these in all likelihood will not be cheap.

means you may not be near the top of audition pools, which will effect any audition talent based scholarships.

I’m not sure what my GPA is from freshman year, but sophmore year was a 3.62. The only AP i’m taking this year is physics B - I’m aiming for a 3.8+ Gpa this year and think I can do it. I haven’t taken any SAT’s yet but on practice I’ve gotten a 1210 - I think I can get it up to at least 1350+.
I wrestled for 2 years but am quitting to focus on school and music. I ahve been in concert band, jazz band, pep band for all of high shcool. I joined choir and Tri-M this year. I have a private student and will be starting to volunteer to give lessons through this program called songcatchers. I also volunteer at a local humane society and habitat for humanity.

Two others in NY, in the Rochester area, are Nazareth (know two people who graduated from there, one did a lot of jazz), and Roberts Wesleyan. Both are reasonable in cost.

Several Music Ed programs that include jazz as an option:

Temple University - B.M. Music Ed. with Concentration in Jazz (5 years, though not a double major)
U. Cincinnati CCM - B.M. Music Ed. with Jazz Specialization
William Paterson University - B.M. Music Ed./Jazz Performance
